Gutted we couldn't get over the last hurdle, but the better team won and I have to admit they've been the most exciting team throughout so truly deserved winners.

I think the 3 lions song should really be put to rest now.

Both teams played well. Penalties are the least effective way of a well deserved outcome.

I think a coin flip would be less effective.

First half was probably the best performance I’ve seen from England.
Italy were always going to find their feet.
Congrats to Italy.

This competition was possibly a year too early for a promising young England team.

The next World Cup could be an interesting prospect.

Yes, some real up and coming players there. I felt a bad for those that missed penalties. Why put the 19 year old last? So much pressure on such young shoulders.

That’s the one thing that I really struggled to understand tonight…

England kept us in until the very end.Italy adapted better as the game went on.so many positives for England going forward.being England now the blame game starts and the abusers will feel free to insult anyone and everyone they don’t like.ignore them and let’s move on to Qatar.thanks lads for 3 weeks of release from the purgatory of covid experts and doom mongers!

That baffled me also. The two subs Sancho & Rashford who didn't even get warm in the game should have gone after the likes of Stones, Phillips or Shaw. When Jorginho hit the post I was convinced Sterling would step up to seal the deal for England.

The order of those taking penalties is decided beforehand. They would have practiced this over the past four weeks, but you can't replicate the atmosphere and emotion of the situation on the training ground. Grealish has not taken a penalty for his club for more than 2 seasons. The goalkeepers have studied the players. They don't leave these things to chance.

Well done Italy and commiserations to England. Not many Welsh people feel that way, but I always support the home nations over any other team.

It's easy to be an expert after the event. If England had won on penalties nobody would be saying they knew best, and we're talking about the outcome of ten kicks of a football. Italy missed two, England missed three. It was that close. England reached the final of the tournament and lost by the closest of margins, and yet everyone and their dog now seems to think they know better than the coach.

Isn’t that how it’s always been in this sport? 😁

As a Yank of English descent married for 48 to an Italian, I had 2 dogs in the fight and rooted for both!
Don't get to see much Euro football but what impressed me most was the play of the keepers on both sides. It seemed to take an outstanding effort to get one by those two.

I feel the ref was quite lenient but I'd rather see that than be too strict and disrupt the flow of play.
I would have hated to see the outcome between 2 fine sides decided by a ref's whistle.

I'm not a follower of football (soccer) but in hockey they have the same rules, but only in the regular season. In the playoffs it's sudden death overtime until one side scores. To me that is a better way of deciding the outcome of a big game, but with the very low scoring rate in soccer, I can understand why they don't do this.

I watched the overtime period and the shootout. What made the biggest impression on me was how much rolling around on the ground players do from mostly incidental and minor contact - you would think someone amputated limbs the way they act. ::facepalm1::

I'm a Brit now living in the US. Nobody likes to see these finals decided by penalties, but I must say that for me Italy was the best team in the tournament and the best team in yesterday's final, so it was a well deserved win to them. What has been upsetting after the game is the racist abuse directed to the three England players that did not score their penalties - and one of the additional upsetting things about it was that it was, sadly, very predictable these days 🙁 Morons!

Penalties don't define players, both teams made their country proud
I bet gladiators would have liked penalty shots instead of fighting to the death!
Not that I condone such an act but it is the pinnacle of competition..

I vote for "last man standing" when it's a championship. No concessions to convenience or to tv or time or schedules.
No questions about who the victory belongs to. (unless there is a whistle)

That would be good. No 90 minute game duration + OT. Just start the game and go until there is only one player left standing. Probably won't even need to track scores, as the score will not matter 😁

Absolutely gutted too that England got so close! If only we'd knocked in a second goal before half time!!!

Fair play, both keepers played phenomenally during the penalty kicks, but I'm still completely gob-smacked at the line up for kickers. Cold feet.... literally, when experienced midfielders like Henderson and Grealish would have made far more sense!

Oh well, it's a stepping stone to Qatar next year!!! COME ON ENGLAND!!!

Grealish actually asked if he could take a penalty, but his request was declined because the gaffer had decided who was going to take them before the game (based on training). I reckon they all needed to be on the pitch a bit longer to get a feel for things beforehand as a training pitch with no fans is a totally different beast to a (relatively) packed Wembley stadium.

All in all, Italy were the better side (14 goal attempts to 4], and had the player of the tournament in their goalkeeper Donnarumma (and this coming from someone who for his whole life has supported England and watched them suffer in major tournaments without ever winning anything) 🙁
