This has to be the best thread to ask for some assistance. I bought this one a while ago and the circumtances around the face to face pick up of it makes me very certain it is legit and honest. Seller was an old guy who had no interest in watches and just put it up for auction together with all his miniture train stuff. He told me that he had got as a gift from a girlfriend many, many years ago and then used it every day, for a long time, in his work as a military navy officer and later in his own diving/boat service business. He had it serviced a couple of times and the relume of the hands came about at one of those times. It has also been polished at some time. Now to the fun(?). I have not found one picture on the net of a similar dial. This configuration of indexes normally and only shows up on orange colour dials. Have any of you seen a black-greyish dial with these indexes? Strap is my addition.
Just to understand you right... Have you seen this exact watch, or a similar - with a non-orange dial paired with these broad indexes?
Pretty sure it was the exact watch because that type of thick serrated bezel on a Kon Tiki made it stand out, and I, of all people, would have remembered it being orange.
Very, very unlikely if it was not here: http://www.tradera.com/item/342154/227382297/klocka-kon-tiki#view-item-main Or when I posted it in "What did you buy today". The seller had no knowledge or affiliation to wathes - I guarantee... edit: I picked it up at/in his home and I could tell you things...
Sure it's a Eterna Super Kontiki This configuration is similar to those Used by Isreali IDF forces. They were also sold to public in this Configuration. 1970ish. Israeli versions had caseback markings And there are many fake casebacks To try and up the value
I was following that one. The dial bothered me as I had not seen one just like it before. I do remember finding a similar looking dial using google picture search. I never got around putting in a bid for it. For what it matters I think the background story and looks holds water. Nice!
Edit: This post not including Northernmans post. I was too slow in writing. Thanks. I am also sure it is a Eterna-matic Kontiki Super. Maybe there has been a missundertanding of my text (me not being English-speaking). I know what model this is and of its history. I never buy watches without very extensive research and I have collected watches for quite some time now. https://www.flickr.com/photos/45306161@N03/sets/72157622817879727/ I know this watchmodel (the Super) was made in different versions. Different bezels, dials, hands, etc, etc. This one differs from the "IDF" and its civilian version in, among other things, the serration and execution of the entire bezel - for instance. All black dials I have seen for this version have thinner "stick" indexes. The only version I have seen with these thick indexes are orange dials. Hence my question: have any of you seen a black dial Kontiki Super with broad indexes - because thru my research I have not. And again - the circumstances around the pick up of this watch almost certainly and to as close to a 100% one can be guarantees it not being a franken or redial.
While reluctant to declare himself an expert, I did receive the seal of approval from a certain Man up North who knows a few things about Eternas. My first two Eternas and I have to say, I think I'll be back. Good bang for the buck. My entrance into the club.... I like the furniture on this one: More recent design but I'm a sucker for a linen dial:
Hmm, have picked up a couple since my first posting in this thread: This 60 was recently seen elsewhere on the OF Another Alcan presentation watch; no picture of the back, but I will try to get one this weekend. Alcan must have had an account with Birks to have so many presentation pieces out there!!
I could mention a certain beauty I have on the f.s. at the moment but that really wouldn't be on so best I stay quiet
