·What about pawnshops?
I think a lot of the marks were pawnbroker marks, to tell them if the item was frequently shifted through the system.
Not really much of a reader of detective mystery, I think though this is sometimes used as the maguffin.
Tastes also change. I got my speedy cheap as it had an engraved back (the bracelet was also engraved.) I also got a non engraved back from a different reference number. I put the non engraved back on it at it was a daily wear watch. Somehow despite efforts to the contrary I lost the correct engraved back.
I often wonder who W.C.L was. It was obvious a presentation engraving. And the watch found its way into the estate markets and then to a NAWCC regional.
More recently I have been getting 134x quartz watches. Most which seem to be service award watches.
Sticky dots now seem to be the norm by my hardware store watchmaker, whom I use for the quick battery change, when I want a guaranteed fresh battery.
