I was once a Swiss snob, but have been enlightened to what the Japanese can do when they want to make a point. @Qwertyqaz - do a little reading in the Grand Seiko’s, they pretty much knocked them out of the park and left the Swiss sweating- they can run head-to-head with anything Rolex or Omega can do on their best days.
I know about the Grand Seiko’s but they are priced in a range where it’s hard to justify especially for a Japanese watch.

I can understand that-it’s kind of like when Volkswagen released the Phaeton. It was a spectacular car, on par with anything Mercedes or BMW had ever put out- but a Volkswagen for the same price as an S-class?!!! Yeah, it was hard to swallow.

10 pages in and two weeks later what have you learned and what have you narrowed down your options to based on suggestions from forum members and your personal tastes?

Heck, this thread alone pushed me over the edge to pull the trigger on my first diver and it came it today:

For around $1000

For a lot more money

I too own the SBGX115 Grand Seiko, and love it. I'd also like to have it's sibling, the SBGX117, or even the SBGX337.

It's been little more than a piss take for the last 185 posts imo.

Despite the OP being offered everything on the menu and still not finding something he likes, I have found this thread to be an awesome guide to divers under $2k. It’s been great to see a diver thread where the SM300 or some variation on a Submariner didn’t dominate.

It's true, just about everything in the stated price bracket has been mentioned, but the thread has highlighted that this hobby can on occasions turn up real quality without breaking the bank. The highlights for me are some the Seiko from the last couple of years and the Certina dive watches and the Tissot Seastar, and Alpina twin crown vintage heritage watch, also some of the Squale sub homages not to mention the often overlooked Longines Hydraconquest ceramic, but I guess the search goes on for a Rolex hulk lookalike with Rolex quality for 1k

The Squale 60atom are at the top of my list for vintage style awesomeness by a company with a heritage of making only dive watches- but the size scares me, I would need to see it on the wrist to know (anyone here have one that wants to share their impressions?)
I also would like the add the Helson Skindiver to that list (I have one and it scratches the BPFF itch I will never be able to afford, is built like a tank, is perfectly balanced visually at 41mm and is a real 300m diver) and the offerings from Crepas look mighty attractive.

The Tudor Black Bay has gold plating on the arms and that is fine from a price perspective.
Does the Omega Seamaster have any precious metals.

The question is more to understand do these luxury brands have a much higher quality parts that justify the price or you pay for the brand.
Eg: My Speedmaster oozes quality and it stands out in the collection.
