It was a hot watch until they flooded it into the market last moment. The Snoopy release was much less and actually controlled.
Snoopy release wasn't controlled, Omega had difficulty producing the caseback to the required quality level in large numbers so the number of them coming out was very slow which artificially bumped up the price in much the same way that Rolex had issues producing the green crystal on the Milgauss GV and they ended up hitting $30k+ because people thought Rolex wasn't making very many.

CK2998 has no difficult to produce silver enamel caseback so there's nothing to hold production up and it is flowing into the market as you would expect.

I loved this watch how it looks plus its only at 40mm so it wears better on more modest wrist like mine.

These limited edition watches whether from omega or another luxury watch company are contrived collectibles and very rarely increase in value. Add to that the feeling that in 2019 - the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing - omega will likely come out with more unique and desirable speedmaster models (perhaps even a modern recreation of the original cal. 321 movement) hence these are likely the ones to own if you are pursuing the closest thing to a modern version of the original. As for me, I will stick to the vintage omegas!

I'm going to go out on a limb on this one... I would never own this watch, while I do think it is very pretty.

My issue is I am not sure it is a watch that many people would actually put into rotation. It is dressy but not wearable with a black or dark grey suit. It is not a jeans or causal watch. Hence why I think it is received well, many people just are not going to jump out on a limb to get this one.

I also think this watch would have looked way better in Gold.

Besides Silver Snoopy has any other LE garnered such demand and attention?
Perhaps lack of social media lessened the acceleration and muted demand?
I'm sure the 50th moon landing in 2019 will be nice but who knows if it will have the hype and price appreciation of Silver Snoopy
I'm also sure the 60th anniversary of the Speedmaster in 2017 will be quite a pleasant offering too!

Yup, the LEs are all going down.
I'm available for any member who wants to dump their 1975 Apollo Soyuz LE.
I'll take one for the team 😀

I'm thinking this watch will dress up or down quite a bit with a change of strap, or even a bracelet.

well, it's in my rotation and it's getting the most wrist time. It has really grown on me. I think the watch dresses up better but not bad worn casually-- I recall one of the earliest marketing pieces on this showed a guy driving a retro looking convertible wearing a T-shirt. Not sure why it would not be wearable with a black or charcoal suit, although a black suit should be for funeral only. if you really want to be technical, your watch strap color should match other leather (belt, shoes) but seriously, how many of us really follow that all the time? I work in business casual setting (dress shirts and pants) and almost everyone wears some combo of white, blue, charcoal mostly. this watch goes fine with all.

and "this watch" is in fact made in gold- sedna gold FOIS, minus the lollipop hand. it's gorgeous.

When this was first announced and when i saw the price, i recall thinking : no, will stick with vintage speedy.

For LEs, i believe they are and will not be as desirable as vintage speedies. And perhaps the ebay bid is a reflection of that.

I wasn't around for the first iterations of the Snoopy but did this craziness happen also with the old version? I had the impression the old ones price jumped up at the same time the white one was announced. That being said I still find it weird that with more than 30 white snoopies for sale the price didn't dip under 9-10k yet. That being said I find the ck2998 an acquired taste, personally for me is not doing much in terms of looks.

I started watch collecting just back in 2014 and then i recall the first Snoopy was trading at averagely $4k to 5k, now i see it hovering around the $8k mark. I think you are right to say that the old one jumped in price with the release of the new one. But on the other hand, prices across the board for Speedies (both vintage and modern but more pronounced for vintage) has seen steady increases over the years.

I can count only a handful of big name manufacturers that can command a premium on their new offerings. Have we just transferred into an era with too many being produced to keep a healthy secondary market?

Looks like "pre-approval" is working to me.

Congrats! 👍

...That way those people who really love Omegas are not paying double on the secondary market..

I'd add the adjective "fool" in front of "people" who are willing to pay double the MSRP for any product in the secondary market 😉

hey! we are holding on to the same limb 😜 me however, I do think is just a very ok watch 😀

one issue with me is the "2998" designation given to the watch, as written on its review by Hodinkee: "Some of Omega's tribute watches are straight recreations, while others get a little more creative. The Speedmaster CK2998 is definitely the latter...... yup, the way I see it, there was definitely a bit of excess of creativity in making this particular tribute watch.

nevertheless, everyone buys and wears what they truly enjoy!

I'm just annoyed that all my Web searches for 2998 now turn up results for this one when it's not what I'm looking for.

Oh, and get off my lawn!

😀

I was one of the "losing" bidders on this auction....went too high and I don't have access to a good supply source. I ended up getting another CK2998 for 6k....still too high but I hope the price doesn't get TOO low.
