Maybe I am going blind or something, but for the life of me I cannot see a step in this dial. Can you, or is this perhaps a service dial without it?

I cannot see one either, but have to admit I like the lume even if it isn't the correct dial

It looks like a very early service dial. all three hands have hand replaced, the 3 chronograph hands have been replaced . I would say this is a watch made up of several watches would be nice to see the movment and case back photos.

Hi

Probably a modern service replacement dial relumed to an aged appearance....

Kind of with Neil on this one, I'd say it's a service dial which has been relumed but my only reservation with this conclusion is that there appears to be some age spotting on the dial too and that's going above and beyond in regards to ageing

Surely the early dials, 2998-1/, didn't have a step, at least not the same as the late '60s?

Yes, but the minute recorder subdial marks should be shorter, and the O in Omega should be more oval if it were an early 2998 dial.

Thanks all. It is supposed to be 2998-61

More pics as requested...

Serial number is in range, 2 step case back. To me bezel, case, pushers and case back look legit, but of course I could have missed something and all that goes down the drain. My main question mark was dial, as my research shows that it should definitely have a step, which this one does not.

Be careful of buying without a good dial.. The dial is one of the most valuable parts, and for these, very hard to find alone. And when you do, they are not cheap. A few have gone on ebay lately for over $3K, so factor that in the Price of you're considering picking this up.

Oh for sure. It would have to be a damn good deal to even consider it. This was more for my own education I suppose. I didnt see a step, so wanted to confirm I was correct. Besides money all gone on the AT that should be arriving next week, so there is that too. 😀

I am not convinced this is not an original A5 dial. There is clearly a ring around the dial where step should be, and sometimes the step can be worn down from service. Also, age spotting as noted by Tom.

That is an interesting thought. It would be good to get to the bottom of this and figure out if it is in fact original dial, but I am afraid that isnt possible unless watch is in hand.

You could ask for pics of the dial at various angles in sunlight. That will usually bring it out.

Ive never heard of the step wearing down. I guess it's possible but I don't know. The unstepped dials can look stepped in certain light.

Is this a private or business seller?

If you're not actually interested in the watch, I'd say it's approaching bad form to have the seller running around taking and sending extra pictures when you're just curious and have no interest in buying.

online sale, store by the looks of it. Main reason I said I am not interested is because I was under the impression that dial is replacement. If it turns out to be original, that would most likely change my thought process. Since I cant see watch in person, only way to see what is going on is through pics. I dont like when people waste my time when I sell something, so I wouldnt want to do that to someone else either.

For me its a replacement dial, aged.

I could be wrong, and that would be proved by seeing the back of the dial.

The minute track is unusually perfect.
The indices on the sub dial are long - I expect to see them short on dials with no step.
The plots are an unusual colour and consistency.
The incorrect hands indicate an assembly by someone who is not as familiar as many on this forum with 2998's.

Therefore I would tend to assume a new, aged dial unless proved otherwise by sight of the back which will give a definitive answer.

Here is a later, correct, 2998 dial.

The step is slight, but it is there. These steps can be easily disguised by lighting and this shot has a lot of light in the crystal. However if you look carefully between 10 O'clock and 12 o'clock it is pronounced.

Seller doesnt want to provide any more pics (cant be bothered), so that is that from me, Will be interesting to see if anyone bites at it. Starting bid is around $5K. 3 days or so left.
