Superb! Especially the 1 and 2. Pristine tropical dials, both Black Base 1000 styles, 2 hour/minute hand styles and a lollipop. Awesome.

Amazing! All of them.
At a very close look it seems that mine and a few other have slightly short minute hands ( a half to a complete marker-length). Are they changed at some time?

This thread has a touch of irony to it now that it's matured. The original premise from the OP was that people looking for a 2998 have forgotten what a good 2998 looks like and should not be paying a premium to buy a beat up 2998. Subsequently, all the members here have posted pictures of their amazing 2998s. Often these pics have hoards of amazing 2998s 2 and 3 deep. Has it dawned on you all that we the people not in possession of a 2998 have to buy a crappy one because you guys have hoarded all the good ones? I mean I think this thread makes that point. Come on, do you need three of them? (Rhetorical question don't answer)

No one has forgotten what a great 2998 looks like, they just aren't for sale.

It's an 1168. It was used on the 1975 Apollo Soyuz LE as well as a few seamasters apparently.

It's all for sale. You just have to figure out what you're willing to pay.

Maybe better stated: "What you're able to pay" 😉

"Able"implies logic. Regarding issues where passion is involved, reason has to be dispensed with. 😀

I feel like 99% of watch collecting is just having extremely deep pockets. Sometimes I sit back and really think about the countless hours of pay that would go into just one of these. And I get a little bit disgusted with myself. And then I start to ponder the point of it all.

Then I read threads like this and silly ideas like "retirement" and "savings" tend to go out the window. Who needs that anyway when you have a 2998... assuming there are any good ones left! 🫨

If it were simply an issue of passion then I'd liquidate my IRA accounts.
I'm afraid if reason were cast aside, my wife would make me a KIA 🙁

Nope. 99% of watch collecting is persistence and luck.
