Bubble dome on a 14060

I’m saying that there is no need for an $80 aftermarket dome pliexi for a 5500/1002 because there are plenty of $6-88 ones out there. Pretty certain they won’t fit a 14000, but who knows. The plexi bezel and case interface probably has a different shape than the sapphire version. Better move is to find a 5500 you like and offer a swap for your 14000.

I'm similar...originality is key, but at the same time I have fallen for the charms of acrylic now that I have the Heslalite Speedmaster., Yes Sapphire is technically superior, but the warmth and clarity of Hesalite is unreal.

I could be tempted to put a domed acrylic on a 14060, yes I could.

I think the real problem is that it is a flat sapphire. Might be interesting to fit a dome sapphire on it. I have a 93 speedmaster date with a (original) subtle dome sapphire and it looks really great.

Reading this makes me wish that I still had my 14060 to fit one on....

@JwRosenthal

Nice look, pictures seem more like a ‘tool’ watch to my eye now?

A domed sapphire would be intersting, I have them in a few watches and it’s attractive- doesn’t have the same look as acrylic, but the dome is a nice touch. The problem with sapphire in general is the need for an absolute perfect fit with the gasket- it has to be to the micron or it will leak, or it will break upon pressing (or just won’t go in). So the aftermarket dome would have to be exactly the same dimensions at the ring-to the micron- as the factory crystal. Acrylic has a little more room as it can flex.

I’ve actually thought about trading my 14060 for a 5513 just for the acrylic. Inflated prices don’t justify it though. Now you’ve got me wondering if I should try this with mine!

It’s worth the try- it was a game changer for me.

This is just a great looking mod. Thanks. You have opened up a whole world of contemplation for a sub-date with a dome crystal...a sub-dweller. What is the word on your water resistance...enough for a thunderstorm is all that matters to me for something like this!

Haven’t done the test yet as my watchmaker has been horribly backlogged (apparently covid gave time to clean out sock drawers everywhere), but the fit of the acrylic was not loose- it was quite snug going in with the same resistance as pressing an acrylic into a case designed for it.
My buddy has an old fashion Bulova waterproof test kit that uses a soapy mixture and a suction pump and gives a basic GO/NO GO (see bubbles- no go) so I should have him give it a test.

So any update on if it passed a WR pressure test?
Lol- I haven’t brought it to my watchmaker to do an actual pressure test. It passed the Tupperware of water over night test (empty case with back and crown screwed on) and not a drop. I don’t swim with a watch so haven’t risked that- but it’s been over 3 years of weekly wear in all weather (including steamy mid-Atlantic summers with freak downpours) and haven’t had an issue.

Drats!?!? Just bought the same acrylic crystal for my 14060m and brought it to a Rolex certified watch repair... They said its the incorrect size!?!? I still had to pay $70 for them to put the watch together and make sure everything is back to specs, but the weren't able to do it!?! I'm gonna get the watch back and attempt it on my own... I'll let u guys know what happens.... wish me luck.

Of course they said it’s “not the right size”, it’s not a Rolex part nor was it ever sanctioned by them. I’m surprised they didn’t snatch it away and smash it with a hammer, then seize your 14060 on grounds of abuse.

Right!?! The watch repair said they'd do it even if it was an aftermarket part. I'm gonna attempt it myself and if i do get it to fit I'm gonna give them a piece of my mind hehe.

As long as it’s the exact one I showed in my first post, and the vendor hasn’t changed anything, it should be a perfect fit. It presses in like any other acrylic crystal- without the gasket for the sapphire- that’s the thing. They may have been trying to use the gasket and that’s only for sapphire- acrylic doesn’t need the gasket becuase it flexes on its own and creates the seal by pressure fit. Try to press a sapphire into a metal case without the gasket and it will shatter.
If you have a crystal press then you will be able to install it fine. Press in crystal, then press on retainer, then reinstall bezel.

But if you don’t then you may have a hard time getting it to seat by hand- would be one hell of a hard push on the bench.

And it goes without saying- but I need to anyway as not everyone has the same DIY skills, do NOT have the movement/dial in the watch when you do this! Even though it presses in from the front, you need to push the sapphire out from the back and never do this kind of work over a dial as one slip….😲

@JwRosenthal awe crap… i missed that part when u said to remove the movement lol… so to remove the “sapphire” crystal from the metal ring should be pushed out from the bottom? Ill atempt that using the press once it arrives… Must admit, this is pretty fun even though the anxiety haha.
