Big problem with helium escape

Dude, I think you should have chosen another Noble Gas instead of krypton. Neon is the much closer in weight to helium so it would have less chance of damaging the balance & pressure. Plus, it would give your watch a healthy glow.
In fact, neon, helium, krypton, hydrogen all glow.

Hey guys, is this a joke? Replacing air with helium won't affect the mass of a watch as stated the OP.

Here's an approximation:
Density of helium: 0.18 kg.m-3
Density of air: 1.28 kg.m-3
Difference: 1.1 kg.m-3
Case volume: 4 cm diameter x 0.8 cm = 10 cm3

Assuming the helium completely fills a watch case with 5psi pressure above atmosphere (or 1.3 atmosphere), we have 1.1kg.m-3 x 1.3 x 10 cm3 = 14 mg, which is over a thousand times smaller than stated above.

Am I missing something???
To calculate the helium volume correctly, you will need to remove the movement and measure it's volume by seeing how much water it displaces in a measuring cylinder. Then you need to subtract that value from the case volume.

This is a beautiful thread. Reminds me the time that we went into a new boy's room at 1am, did a radon check in his closet with a lacrosse stick and told him that we had bad, bad news...

Poor fucker was doing nude jumping jacks in front of the dorm when the dorm master came out asking what in the hell he was doing.

"Getting rid of the radon!"

Still get a chuckle at the radon check.
Real nice that you can laugh about such serious subjects 👎

Nitrox. Safer. I had Rolex replace the air in my Sub (since helium is not an issue, thank you very much 🤦) at last service. Not cheap, but peace of mind is priceless. I'll leave it as an exercise to the readers to calculate how much heavier my watch is now.

Having now read this thread in full, I am experiencing physical effects similar to those induced by inhalation of nitrous oxide. 😲

Interesting!
But given that there are different watches being filled, here, is there need to establish a new standard of measure for Helium fill?
I would put forth the EVOIBA (Equivalent Volume of Inflated Balloon Animals).
This would let the rest of the Helium-consuming industry be able to relate to our Horological needs of this elemental resource.
For instance, a typical bond Seamaster 300 might be .15 EVOIBA.

This is starting to worry me. In years to come will collectors be insisting that sellers disclose whether the helium is "factory original" or "service replacement"?

I generally give my watch a good pump of helium in the morning and carry it around on a string like a balloon.

That's a lot of money for helium. Does anyone have any experience with gray market helium?

I saw some tests on You-tube. It showed that most gray market Helium was only 93-96% pure.

And there's an outrageous re-stocking fee if you want to return it.

Absolutey, but it may be as low as about 5ppm.

This was the whole intention of my original post. Getting the the word out. But you having a Sub - not a SD - might get you off the hook as if it has helium it must have been retrofitted with it.

I not only have a sub but I have a DSSD
