Best dress watch?

The Patek Philippe 5270p would be my go to dress watch ... in the alternate universe where I have Jeff Bezos money. It might be too thick and bulky, or maybe the chronograph or QP makes it too busy or complicated. But truly one of the most incredible watches I've ever seen in person, though sadly never got to handle. I think you'd be hard pressed to go up to someone in a suit and tell them it's not a dress watch.

My only proper dress watch (so far) is a JLC MUT.

I think it’s a great as a dress watch. Thin. Leather strap. Hours and minutes only.

It’s manual wind. And in steel (which might be a disqualification for some).

So i nominate any no-complication MUT as the best dress watch. Bar none.

150% agree with @pongster.

JLC MUT. Clean, minimalistic and elegant.

So no need to be a “rich man” to play the sport/game. Thank you sir.

Well, you have to be reasonably well off to keep a horse. But it's not like auto racing or America's Cup racing.

I like the VC Traditionelle for a modern dress watch. High quality case, dial, hands, and movement. Easy to have it serviced by a brand that's backed by a large group. Discreet and comfortable due to a reasonable size and thickness. The movement is sized appropriately for the 38 mm case.

Rolex 36mm datejust, jubillee bracelet with blue / black dial. Or a gold 1803 day date 😀

Very seldom dress up and not even sure if a Globemaster would count but you reach a stage in life when you stop caring 😉

That is a great image. When I last looked in the Omega online catalogue, this watch did not grab me at all, even with its Constellation heritage. The images looked almost boring - but seeing your watch in the flesh (or on the flesh to be more precise) has changed my mind completely. I really like the extraordinary dark blue dial and the finish of the case.

This prompted me to go back to the online catalogue again: and the image difference is still there. It just confirms the old adage that you have to see something on the wrist (preferably one's own wrist) to decide whether a watch suits you.

And I looked at the price too, thinking I might be paying my favourite AD a visit when this other stuff blows over.

A dress watch should be elegant and discreet. Less than 40mm, thin profile, plain dial - just hours, minutes, and seconds. Black leather strap.
Probably not this...

In my humble opinion, Longines made the most elegant dress watches during the 1950s and 1960s. Their homages to the Conquest and Flagship lines of that period would be great modern options, but nothing really beats the charm of the originals. Also, I think most modern watches are much too big to really qualify as a "dress" watch; they are too large in diameter and too thick.

For me, the perfect dress watch was always a 1960s Longines ref. 8888.

This older thread has some lovely images to peruse:

A vintage Patek Philippe ref. 565 with breguet numerals is just... dreamy 🥰
