Vintage buy this time. Bulova 23 XW. Coming my way from Howell, MI.

Curiosity about the $95 price of this watch in the 50's translated to 2022.

This front loader arrived from Japan. A few scratches and a minor gouge but otherwise an exemplary and handsome 1969 beater (on the days I don’t want to risk my C cased Connie) 😀

Now, would that be a homage, or a copy😜😁.
Just joking, it's lovely, I really am starting to appreciate this case design, it works....

Just picked up this Technos with mesh bracelet. Dial is in great condition, but hard to photograph without reflections.

Today was a good day. 😀
Not only did I receive the nice Russian Zenith copy above, but as fate has it, my watchmaker called me to tell me that the original that "inspired" it was ready for pickup. I bought this set last fall by chance and absolutely love the intricacies. The pictures don't do it justice, but apart from a few hairline scratches, it's practically flawless with bright, clean dial and now seems to run well within COSC. 🥰

I also won an auction on a beauty of a 40s Wyler today, but that needs to be a story for another day.

Ah, a two-tone friend of mine! 😉

I have recently received two other watches that are not as prominent, but seem to get along with each other well. For me, it's hard to chose between those two, if I am to wear one:

This arrived today, and it is one that I have been lusting after for quite some years. I am happy that I happened to stumble upon one in relatively exceptional condition at a fair price. 🥰

After buying a new sapphire sandwich Speedmaster a couple of years ago (because I wanted to admire the 1863 movement), then an earlier Speedmaster moonphase (because I liked the silver moon, the white gold bezel and blued hands/indices), how did I explain to my significant other why I also needed this standard Speedmaster from around 1999? Did she understand why I wanted hesalite on the front, and a standard back with that iconic NASA inscription?

Not really, but she likes watches too and totally understands the collecting bug. I am a lucky man.

It arrived today.

I know this is typically for photos of watch arrivals but what about a vintage watch magazine advertisement arrival? (Please excuse the glare)

Almost positive the ad is for a 166.028 / 168.022 with the orange second hand.

If only I could have bought this watch new for $150, now that would have been something special! Price aside would be happy to be a custodian to one of these, really dig this reference with the dark hour / minute hands and orange second hand.

Nice poster.

I stand to be corrected but the '8’ in '168' generally indicates that the watch is a chronometer. The watch dial in the poster doesn’t specify ‘chronometer', so I’d assume (given that the Mexico Olympics were in 1968) that it’s more likely to be a '166'.

From what I’ve read / found and what is noted here about the reference system, @Spruce I think you’d be correct about the “168” being used for the chronometer reference. From what I’ve seen for this particular Seamaster the case backs were typically double stamped 166.028 &168.022, hence my use of both. That being said I've also seen multiple non chronometer references of this model and case style with a solo 168.022 stamp on the case back. See this one for example and also this one listed on eBay. Could just be that the case back was used as a replacement or it was a service case back. Either way I figured I'd list both references.

You know that $150 in 1968 is like $1200 today?

Still less than 1/4 the price of today's version
