" I have no idea what it is or does but it was cheap, looked cool and appealed to my inner child"

From wikipedia
"
Yema is a watchmaking company in Besan莽on, France. They claim that their watches "stand out from the rest by virtue of their specific design and technological characteristics".

Founded in 1948 in Besan莽on (Doubs) by Henry Louis Belmont, the company distinguished itself in the very beginning by creating the first automatic chronometers manufactured entirely in France, and became famous for the technical qualities and sports characteristics of its watches."

Sounds like you found a winner.

The company was once owned by Seiko but has since returned to French ownership.

PS
Found a pre owned YEMA Identical to yours on ebay priced a over 2,800 USD.

Thanks and also to Professor - I found out about Yema, just wasn't sure what a Meangraf was for or the two scales and symbols on inner scale... still it looked like something ripped off a flight deck and I picked it up for about $600 - closing auction late Sunday and no one had bid on it...

Here's a daytime shot - being worn now 馃榾

The outer scale is calibrated at 4km/s... that's the speed of seismic s-waves. There are two inner scales ... but not sure what they're calibrated at. (Isn't "ecoule" the French for school?). Well, if nothing else, you could probably work out where an earthquake's epicentre is if you knew a few more details.

That's awesome - working out earthquake epicentres - I suppose if I ever do sell, I can try to l sell it to someone in California 馃榾

My French colleague tells me Temps Ecoule means "Elapsed time"...

Completely unexpected purchase today while picking up a watch from the watchmaker. Couldn't pass it up, completely intact and supposedly first ever service. 鉂わ笍 It!

Hi Guys,
When I bought this early last Spring as part of a 6 watch lot for 200 euros I didn't quite know what i was letting myself in for. I sold the other five for around 200 I paid and put this in for repairs.
I didn't know the horological importance or the collectability of the cal p478 then.In horological circles It is regarded as a classic and was used in the famous, rare, and very much sought after the limited Geophysic models from around 1958.
The watch was probably a forerunner to that series (they certainly look very similar) and was made 54-56. Originally it was missing it's crown, winding pinion , and further inspection revealed a damaged clutch wheel and escape . As we know, JLC don't do parts, and parts for cals like this one very rarely show up . I found what I could myself and my watch guy (bless him) knew a guy, who knew a guy, who knew a guy, to get the clutch wheel. The afore mentioned supplier said to my watchguy, "When you get it up and running, tell him to sell it!". This is probably sage advice as P478 parts whilst scarce now, will be almost impossible to get in the future. I don't believe the crown to be original but at this point I can live with that.
This is officially now my official 'Wear with kit gloves and thenonly once a month " treasure watch. I've got 5 other JLC watches from the 40's /50's including a very early Powermatic and a wrist alarm and they'll all probably get a lot more wrist time.
I'm not planning on selling it very soon . Up till now, the nicest watch in my collection was a 1969 Speedy Mark 2....I think this simple uncomplicated and (in my eyes ) very classy one has just stolen the crown.....Apologies if you come across a repeat posting elsewhere on the forum,..i'm just sooooo pleased!!

Arrived today. Onyx Pie Pan 167.005. I lost my discipline when this went up for sale. I love these dials and dog leg cases. With its pain in the ass to set but lovely stablemate.

Look like you have great discipline you bought those instead of paying the house note or buying food. That sliver pie pan is to die for

Two little sweeties came to me this weekend for 拢10 more than the scrap price of the gold one ...

The Garrard is in 9ct gold with an ETA 1280 17j engine and dates to 1956; the ladies driver is more intriguing - the case is made by Fauvette and my brief research says they stopped making watch cases in 1880. It's got a sweet cloisonne enamel back and a swiss cylinder escapement movement that doesn't carry any visible name. Both need to be introduced to a cape cod cloth and want a service ... then we'll see about finding them a new home.

Couldn't resist this one. Another early 70's Seiko 5 21j on original BOR, but his one has a black dial. Seller photo as it's incoming. Just missed having this one join the under $50 club......

The twin with silver dial

This just finally turned up This afternoon after DHL express Portugal bungled the delivery, it is a tribute to James Hunt made by British firm Omologato, it is a Quartz watch but I love it just the same as a mechanical watch.

Finally pulled the trigger on a vintage Kontiki super. I went with a civilian version for less money instead of dealing with the Frankens and fake IDF鈥檚. Seems to be in pretty good shape but I want to send it out for a tuneup and cleaning.
