Apollo XI 1980 white gold dial mod, aka "Silver Speedy" thread

Hello everyone.

I haven't posted much on the forum so far, but I am as much of an Omega fan (all Speedmaster so far), and I guess this is my way of saying hello to you.

I have this standard 3570.50 Moonwatch modded with a white gold dial that I call the "Silver Speedy". I added black baton hands to it, slightly different from the original black "stick hands".

This was after I had read this posting (http://forums.watchuseek.com/f20/bu...s-422278.html#/topics/422278?page=1&_k=64w52s) on Watchuseek and thought it was really beautiful, so when the chance came, I went ahead with the conversion.

My understanding based on Moonwatch Only is that the original model, reference BC 345.0802 in white gold, had only 20 examples made.

Do any of you have the original reference or one modded with this dial? Although this watch is not "original", I really think it is as beautiful a Speedmaster Pro as any other, combining elements of sporty and dressy just right.

Perhaps due to the small number of examples made, I don't see this mod as often as the Mitsukoshi or Japan Racing dial as much, and would like to hear from you.

Please share your pictures, strap combinations, or any interesting experiences with it!

Here is mine to start:

Together with my Italian Albino mod:

Greetings! That's an awesome duo you have there!! I'm waiting for my 3570 to arrive so I can do a mod. However, I'm torn between which dial I should go with. After poking around on eBay and elsewhere I see two slightly different styles: the Apollo XI 25th Anniversary "Silver" white gold, which seems to be what you used. And, an Apollo XI 10th Anniversary Rhodium dial that looks a tad more grey.

Between those two, and the Italian Albino, I can't choose a winner!

Regardless, I would like to add my own personal touch to the mod by having the sweep second hand be a different to add a bit of color. I'm fond of the orange hands from the MKII...

Any advice from your mod experience would be appreciated. Thanks!

Congratulations to this wonderful mod. Although I am usually not in favour of mods - this white gold - some people say rhodium - dial is simply gorgeous.

However I have one question to the experts regardig this dial:
I have seen three different versions of nearly the same dial.
- Yours is what I call "low swiss-made, long index". It is on sale from an ebay seller at the moment as well.
- Then there is the "low swiss-made, short index" version with the indexes on the subdials not extending to the flat bottom part of the subdials, like StaffordWhiteGold.jpg
- And finally there is one version with "high swiss-made, short index"
like this:

In another forum I have seen this version also in a steel cased speedy.

So my question is: Why would one (omega) have 3 version of virtually the same dial for a watch with a production run of 20 pieceses?

Looking forward to any explanations
Benjamin

Aside from a white dial Daytona, Snoopy LE or AP 15300, there are not that many watches that look good in the white/silver theme for me. I would love to own the WG version at some point.

Hi, new to the forum and (Santa came early) I have just received my customed Speedmaster. It麓s a manual wound "Saphire sandwich" converted into a Homage of the Apollo XI 1980, BC 345.0802. Correct hands and dial but metal case instead of white gold, I just love the combination and the different appearance of the dial depending on light. As only 20-25 original where made back in 1980 they are as rare as hens teeth.....and will cost a small fortune if found. Looking to put a suede chocolate strap on when spring arrives 馃榾

Wow I am delighted to find this thread continue and find that there is such interest in these dials.

I converted my 3570.50 with this rhodium dial into a Mitsukoshi panda during the last overhaul. I kept the dial and hands though for later use when the itch comes back. Here is a picture of my Mitsukoshi mod.

These look fantastic (imho).
I found a set of dial and hands.
I have a question of someone can kindly help with.
What would happen if I have this modification and that I need my modified watch to be serviced in the futur. Can I go directly to omega, as this used to be available as an option?

I might try to replicate this one. I am just wondering how the dial hand combination will look on a stell case

Hi-well you can see how it looks....just view mine ii thread, it麓s extremely similar to the ultra-rare...and ultra-expensive original with white gold case. By far my personal favourite of ALL Omega麓s 馃榾 - Go for it!

I completed my Apollo dial swap recently. Loving the silver dial and decided to go with an orange second sweep hand to give it a little color. It looks great on a bracelet but my personal fav is a simple black nylon strap with white stitching...

Nice to see this thread resurrected after 2 years!

While the opportunity's there, I had a query for anyone with a rhodium dial mod - has anyone tried or handled both versions with the stick hands (like original Apollo XI) and the baton hands (I believe like the unrestricted sales version)? What is your preference?

I've currently got a rhodium dial and am looking into options for hands. I think I like the stick hands better (lack of lume goes better with the dial plots) but I've never seen either example in real life!

i went with the batton hands as I too think that it suits the dial best. that said, the other hands look great too.
I will post when I get it back on Thursday 馃榾
