I really wanted one when they were introduced. On pictures they looked great on the wrist. But I refused to pay those ridiculous prices. Then after a couple of months I saw a couple on the wrist of friends. Funny thing is these friends are'nt watch people at all. Anyway, I thought they were a bit of a disappointment. They look better on picture then in real life.

They look like toys in real life.

Seen a few in the wild…very easy to identify as plastic fashion.
Funny as their is always just as much fashion jewellery as real jewellery.

Money would always have been better spent on a Seiko….But….

Why does this read like it was written by A.I.?
Because @sheepdoll is really a Jaquet-Droz automaton adapted to use a Mac instead of a quill-pen?

Hype is gone, but how about a next gen swatch with sapphire crystal and (cheap) automatic movement at a semi-low price and a new theme other than planets, maybe countries or cities… it would create even more hype. Do it Swatch.

Last time I went into one of the Swatch shops they didn't have Neptune. It still seems to be difficult to get for some reason

Finally grabbed the Neptune in Singapore recently when I was there on holiday. Family was sleeping and I couldn't so wandered downstairs and the Swatch shop just got a shipment in that morning so had pick of any model except the white Moonphase that just released the day before. While I was there for barely 5-6 mins, I counted 8 people coming into the store asking for the Moonphase and about half of those settling for another colour they wanted.

The Moonswatch got my teenage son more interested in watches since I let him wear the Mercury as his daily. He really likes the look of it over his old Citizen. He was asking about quartz versus mechanical and the different kinds of mechanical movements. Toy it may be to some but still a win as far as I'm concerned.

P.S. The Mercury spent about 15 hours submerged in swimming pools over the duration of the holiday.

I got the grey one last week in La Jolla. It’s perfect for a fam trip to Paris this summer. Don’t have to worry about someone stealing it. I used to wear a 5610 G Shock, but like this a lot more. I can’t pass as a local there.

The store didn’t have the moonphase models or the Neptune. They had the Storms Scuba. Too tall for my wrist, but I liked it a lot.

Compared to the ML Aiken Tide watches. swatch moon watch is a good value. The Tide was is $700 retail for a plastic quartz watch.

I bought what were supposed to be two homage models and paid $30 each. Chinese company makes an exact copy including box, coffee cup, insert etc. for $30, but ML genuine retails for $700

true the prices of these plastic watch should have been half or less, but people paid and as they’re not hard to find now as some have mention.

the fever isn’t there to run around and get one

I don’t wear the ML watch as they were supposed to be sans name and they aren’t so stored away.

Like all of these 'fad' items, there will be a nostalgia market somewhere down the line. An original Police (the group, not the force} themed Rubics cube recently sold for £1000 and the 'masterpiece' one is valued at over a million. Just got to keep the original packing and hope you live long enough to cash in!

I don't think anyone at Swatch or anywhere thought that these would be a long term dynasty. Still a tremendous success in branding. I would bet that there are many incremental Speemaster sales coming from moonswatch sales for years to come.

This is the correct response.

As for there being no market for plastic watches, there's still plenty of demand for 80s & 90s swatches, including by me, and they're selling for 4x, 5x msrp. These will be collector's items 25 years from now with full sets going for big $$$.

With that, Rolex types didn't like them, won't like them, and can be counted on to be snobby about it.

Obviously, you have a chip on your shoulder about Rolex. But if you go back and read the original Moonswatch thread, the main complaints were coming from die-hard Omega fanboys who felt that the MoonSwatch devalued the brand.

And they were very wrong...

Swatch Group is laughing all the way to the bank with close to 90% margins on these watches. Good for them

Imagine being the guy who spent $1k on one on ebay

that’s the price of the
‘must have it now, instant gratification culture’

-and tomorrow it will likely be abandoned and forgotten in the bottom of the sock / knicker drawer.

Wait. So there are people who DON'T have a chip on their shoulder about Rolex??
