Anyone over here bought this Constellation pie-pan?

Hi all,

Was sold yesterday on an on-line auction for approx € 1000 ex P&P.
Was tempted myself, but waited too long. Pristine piece IMHO, apart from some dents on lugs and presumable use of steel bracelet.
No pics of movement, nor service history.

Any thought on price from you guys? (and the occasional girl...😁 )

Try to get a better feel for prices.

I didn't bid. I'm unsure whether or not it should have a SS medallion (probably just fine...) and it has been returned to the auction house once, so could have issues. Looks amazing though!

I was advised previously, by those that know, that a SS medallion is fine for this era (could be a 14900 or 167.005)
it could have been 'returned' by a shill - but on the other hand you don't know what's under the hood
it looks great -almost too good -except for some chump chewing the lugs when changing the strap and a probable relume
was it 1000 euros hammer price or all in?

a SS 168.004 pie-pan recently sold at auction in the UK for around £1150 all in (excl P&P)
papers and a slightly tatty box but was in good nick
not sure why I didn't buy it - guess i didn't think it would go that high so hesitated (regret it now)
seems like roundabout the market value nowadays at auction for a decent pie-pan

€ 833 hammer plus 28% and P&P would be close to € 1150 actually

It could well be that someone bought it and realised it had gotten too expensive and he'd been caught up in the moment. Lost a perfect black dialled, pie-pan, SS Constellation to someone that way once. It still hurts to talk about it 🤬

Well, the absence of "Officially Certified" on the dial points towards an early example, and that would make it a ref. 14900.
The stainless stell 14900 (and 14902) has a medallion just like the one in the picture above, so that checks out.

I didn´t bid either. After going "Wow" looking at the pictures, I noticed the details where the crosshair lines meet the printed minute markers. It looks fine at 9 o´clock, but slightly misaligned at 12, 3 and 6. Is that something one would expect to see on an original dial?
The crosshair lines also seem a little heavy - I have a feeling they should be slightly thinner.

Apart from that, the fonts and markers on the dial look fine to me. I wonder whether this could be an original dial, with the crosshairs added later?
If it is a redone dial, I would certainly like to know who made it 😁

I'd say that when concerning later Constellations, it pretty much is 1:1 science. Have never seen heavily applied crosshairs on one of those.

I agree that it is more likely to be a 14900 but I think the 'missing' text is on the cusp of the reference change so could be either
However - only one way to find out - take the back off

The way the crosshairs meet the hour hashes is perfectly fine, IMO. It isn't that common, but I have seen it a few times now in the Show & Tell thread. It would seem that it appears on 14XXX most often.

Btw, due to the caseback, the one on auction should be a 14XXX, not a 168.005. The flat area around the medallion gives it away.
