Anyone else done acquiring?

I'm considering focussing on 'lower end' brands with interesting design and history.

I was recently considering this the other day as well, specifically with Longines and Rado (building out a collection based on brand). But I’m in no rush, lots of research left to do.

I feel like I'm only getting started. Every few months I'll swear I'm done and that was the last one. Lots of sleepless nights until I pick up another

I just counted 10 in my collection.



At that point I knew it was time to stop counting, as I was out of fingers and since I had shoes one I could not see my toes.

I'm not actively seeking more watches per say, but there are a couple watches I would jump on if they came up for sale. I may be done with new Omegas, as I have a pile of them and I really prefer the vintage stuff. A lot of the new ones are LEs, and are set aside for my son (some may go towards college; he'll get to choose). I have 5 watches in the group that get me through most situations; a Sinn UX, two modern Speedmasters (both LEs), a 321 Speedmaster, and a PO. Out of those 5, the Tintin gets the call on 75% of the days.

Have you considered Hamiltons? Inexpensive, lots of heritage and models. So much variety in fact that you have to find a focus.

Hamilton is actually where I started, but I have since sold off my collection to focus on Omega. I do love many of their models.

Like others, while I may not be actively acquiring, I'm always on the "look out".

What has constrained me is the mantra of the 3 Cs - condition, condition, condition. I've found a steadfast adherence to that rule has stopped me from buying a lot of pieces.

It's also a killer when something comes up that fits, too. 😉

Wasn’t so long ago that I pulled the trigger on my Navy Pioneer, and thinking that was by far the most I would ever spend on a watch. How times have changed.

I think I’m done.

I purchased a birth year 105.003-64 about a year and half ago from @Darlinboy and haven’t purchased any additional watches since that time...

I think the blue Snoopy's going to be my last for quite some time. Spent way too much this year and the Mrs is not happy.

Half the time I look at my watch, gazing into the liquid glow of the dial, and find myself in a trance ...

... and then look back up, return to the world around me, and realize that I still don't know what time it is.

So I don't wear my watches just to tell the time.

And in answer to the original question, no, I'm not done ... I just have to save for the next one.

Sometimes it’s nice to just slowdown and look down at the little piece of machinery and metal on your wrist.

I am telling myself I’ll wait 5 years to buy another expensive watch. By expensive I mean $5000 usd or above I guess

but I can totally buy a Hamilton, seiko, and others sub $800 along the way

something like that

I've bought all kind of omega's in the last couple of years and I'm trying to figure out what's else out there. I'm considering focussing on 'lower end' brands with interesting design and history.

This is what got me re-inspired with the hobby- looking downstream and applying what I had learned collecting higher end watches. I have actually found it far harder to find a near flawless Zodiac Seawolf than a flawless Rolex or Omega.

I can go on the web and find 20 -1675 bezels in every shade of blueberry, but try finding a crack free Bakelite bezel for a Bulova Oceanographer- not as easy.

I recently picked up a black dialed Elgin Miami- I had hunted for years to find an honest survivor which proved near impossible. These watches are not expensive, but are indeed rare- I felt elated when I finally got it- far more excited than when I got my first Seamaster- this was a much longer and harder hunt.

Part of this hobby is the thrill of the hunt- the research, the digging through obscure web threads discussing the minute differences of factory crowns over a model run- it doesn't matter which vintage brand it is (Rolex or Bulova) everyone one of them has their quirks and story.
For some it's about the goal, and for some it's the path- I love the hunt.

I was in total acquisition mode for a few years. Then I put it all on hold. Then I finally sold a couple pieces. Thinking I was playing with house money, I started acquiring again. I probably went too far and am now overweight. Now just trying to figure out how to satisfy my appetite aka addiction without making choices that are too expensive.

Nah. I can’t even buy records without getting scolded. Retirement comes with a very short leash.
