There is no such thing as free healthcare, education etc. When people say "free", what they really mean is "free at the point of delivery". Unless you run a theoretically perfect Communist model, it all has to be paid for from somewhere and unless to Government has a magical money tree, that means the general population. What a society must decide is whether it is paid for from general taxation, insurances or directly levied on the users.....or some mixture of all three.

With a rising population and increasing numbers of elderly with sometimes complex medical needs, it's a very knotty problem to which I don't have a simple solution.

Well, apart from the Logan's Run scenario 馃槻

Unbridled free enterprise or unbridled government. Give me the former, please.
Ah, but there is a middle path. 馃榾

Then you want to go back to the 1890's, where 1/8 of the population controlled 7/8 of the wealth?

There was no income or estate taxes then. The economy was based on the amount of gold in circulation, since it was the only legal money (although people accepted other forms of currency as an IOU).

In 1893, there was a recession so severe that if one man hadn't stepped in to bail out the US banking system, it would have been shut down. Unemployment in some states was up to 45%.

BTW, this occurred under administration of a new Democratic president, who had just taken over from an ineffective Republican administration (can you say "2009"?馃槈)

I think we've improved a bit since then.

So, what comes after an ineffective Democrat administration that grew the government substantially?

An ineffective Republican administration that grows the government.

Since Republicans tend to cut taxes without cutting spending (as they have to get re-elected), the national debt grows even more.

Yeah, buckle up.

If you thought "special interests" were bad in the past you're in for a rude awakening.

After 11/9 no where on the planet is safe. Russian/USA/North Korea about to take over! Only thing to do now is to buy lots of gold bouillons, invest in a nuclear fallout shelter, and PRAY!

You know, if you're looking for unbridled free enterprise without intrusive government regulations, you could go to Western Sahara, Somalia, or even the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. For the last one, don't worry too much about the term "Administered" -- I understand it's interpreted very loosely. And most poor third-world countries will do nearly as well.馃槈

I believe you all have forgot a very good alternative to Canada and Australia.

Welcome to Sweden.

We all speak English here, there are six months of nice weather every year and the rest of the year we have the famous Swedish opposite sex.
No dangerous animals, no dangerous nature - no volcanos, land slides, tzunamis, earth quakes, etc. We have, by law, at least four weeks of vacation every year (I have six). You get to be with your children when they are born - for a over a year - with pay. Health insurance is not needed - hospitals treat you anyway. People are not armed to their teeth - no need to. We have a voting system that at least helps democracy. We are rated among top three in the world - in democracy ranking. Etc, etc.

Draw backs - I pay around 40% tax. And drinking is rather expensive. Oh - some of you might consider this a draw back (not me) - almost no fire arms.

Good for us in France to keep in mind as we risk getting our own Trumpette in a few months....
Does anyone also vouch for the Swedish "non opposite sex" for those 6 wintery months?
