Amateur buyer looking for a '62 Omega...

Hello, I've been lurking a while and have finally decided to ask for advice! I'm looking at buying my dad an Omega from 62 for his 60th next year, but it I don't really know what I'm looking for and don't want to get more stung than I have to (probably rules eBay out for me). I've seen this https://www.ramsdensjewellery.co.uk...plbOF8txqe1TQmYaJ2U0Gza58E18NWSEaAkWREALw_wcB but am aware the movement isn't visible so it could be dodgy. Basically, any advice or pointing me in the direction of anywhere an amateur won't get ripped off would be hugely appreciated.

Argh, and now I've just noticed how weird the 's' on the dial is! Does this suggest it's not original? What aminefield, I admire your expert eyes!

This is called the "Coat hanger S." It is a normal "S" for earlier Seamasters. Here is an example on my '59. This is a photo from before I changed the hands and crown to the correct ones.

Ah thanks so much - I'm guessing it's a big no no to pull the trigger on this without seeing the movement though?

$1,300 is a little high for a Seamaster, and it sounds like you have plenty of time. Also since it is a gift I would plan on factoring in the price of a service if there is no paperwork that one was done recently. The watch is a very nice example and it may be worth paying the premium for going with a dealer.

Yep, got a few months. I guess I'll keep looking and ask for expert advice on here before I commit. No movement pics from a pawnbrokers puts me off a little too.

If you’re set on a birth year watch, and that’s a really kind thought, you need to see the movement to check that it does have a 19,000,000 serial number (apart from anything else).

This is my 1966 model. Someone else will be able to tell you when Seamasters changed from the 'hook' S to the rounded S.

Thanks all! I'm currently looking at buying directly from Vanallard on this forum as it seems the safest way of going about it!

All advice appreciated - fingers crossed my dad doesn't post on here eh 😉

This watch has a 1963 serial number - although I don’t suppose your dad will mind being a year younger 😉
