Am I being stupid?

I don't post here much but every time I have, always good good advice so here goes.
I got the call today from my AD for a white dial Speedy. I've lusted after one since it first came out. I've never owned a "moonwatch" although I do have a sandwich dial Speedster 57 ( I like , not love this). One of my reasons for looking at a "moonwatch" is legibility- I find the dial of the 57 occasionally a bit difficult to see without my glasses.
So I went in all excitedly , all set to buy the white dial. But although the white dial is stunning, it didn't grab me in the way I thought it would . I also tried on a black dial sapphire crystal- damn if I didn't find that one more legible both with glasses on and off.
I know there's a huge amount of hype about the white dial, and more knowledgable types than me have bought the white and rave about it. But, I bought the black dial.
I only have to please myself here, but is this a decision I will regret ?Part of my thinking is that the black dial has been around for ever for a reason- classic design, minimal changes needed . I was also just thinking that the white dial is the new kid on the block; I was thinking about waiting a year or so and seeing what people long term view of it was. I still want a white dial in the collection at some stage. Thoughts? Am I just being a bit stupid here? Thank you in advance for any comments. Cheers.

Not being stupid.
I cross-shopped the white speedy too (amongst others) a few weeks ago and ended up going with the GSotM, a 10 year old has-been :whipped:

Just like you, I'll likely get one, though others are higher on the list for now. The white dial is super sporty (I'd get the straps), maybe the ultimate sports watch, but we like what we like when we like it.

Much better to get it when you really want it ... as my wife says, "it's better to be single than wish you were"

Two parts to this:

"I only have to please myself here" - absolutely correct. It's your money and it will be on your wrist.

"but is this a decision I will regret ?" - sadly, though there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum, as far as I'm aware there are no soothsayers.

You can overanalyse or simply go for it. As for the future, it will take care of itself.

Thanks!! Yes, I wondered if I was suffering paralysis by analysis( tend to do that often). Appreciate the thoughts.

I got my white dial earlier this year when they were still scarce. It was one of those that I knew immediately that I wanted it. I had looked at the black sapphire and it didn't do it for me. The white one had to be serviced(!) and I bought a hesalite then. Something about the different crystal shape made me like the dial better with it. But as the others have said, it's your choice, get what you want.

Thanks for your thoughts! I looked at a hesalite as well, loved the shape but prefer the open case back on the sapphire . I have a Railmaster57 as well, that will be.my domed crystal watch. Thanks again .

No harm or foul buying a black dial. White will be around if you get the itch, but to me the 57 does good for an almost white dial.

The black dial is probably one of the most legible chronographs. (Not that we can see it without a picture 😉)

I have, and prefer the black dial. IMHO there’s a reason it’s been around for(almost)ever and is so successful. But then I prefer the look of a black dial Explorer II… over the hyped polar version. Enjoy!

I know the rules - pics or it didn't happen. Pictures tomorrow after I pick it up 😀

The only reason I ever considered (and bought) the white dial is because I already own the black one (the hesalite previous gen, 1861 movement). Otherwise I’d go with the black one no questions, the one and only, true classic.

As always, buy what you like. If the white dial doesn't grab you there is no sense in buying one. I've got a few lighter colored dial Speedmasters so I wasn't that interested with the pure white dial, and it didn't interest me when I finally saw it in person. Nice variation, but not something that I wanted. All collecting is personal.

There are no wrong choices. For me, I found the black dialed SpeedMasters a bit boring, so I gravitated to models like the Tintin and the blue CK2998. But over time, I developed an appreciation for the solid black dials as well. I was first drawn to Omega by leaning about the DSoTM, but went to the 321/ 861/ 1861s instead. And eventually picked up a variant of the GSoTM. And I keep my eyes open for an Albino or Alaska.

I did at one stage wonder about getting both the black hesalite and the white dial, but for similar reasons to you went fir the black. Classic for a reason. Thanks!

Funny, a few years ago I looked at a black dial and thought it was boring , as well as not that uncommon. Now , I think the black has a depth that I may not have noticed before. I guess i was looking at the white for 2 reasons- its still a lovely dial, and I didn't move fast enough to get a CK859. But who knew Omega would pull the plug on that one? I guess the white dial Speedy will be around for a while. Thanks!

I sense FOMO from your post, but you did a good thing IMO - you bought what suits you. Why even think of getting something that would not serve its purpose? Why do you care if some youtubers or anonymous voices on the internet glorify the white speedy? You saw them side-by-side and picked one you liked more! As it should be. In general, white dials offer lower legibility compared to black dials. If your eyes prefer the higher contrast of the black dial, that is the way to go. But who am I to tell you, I own a brown dialled speedy and a Globemaster, both seen as outliers by the majority. And I don't give a .... regret 😀

Oh, and if you can't get that white dial out of your head, just wait a little and get one later. The white one is probably here to stay for a while, based on the positive response since its launch.

For me the FOMO was not liking the black one until I already had the white one. So now I have both plus one and love them all.

You can't go wrong with the black Speedmaster, especially the 3861 version with the stepped subdials. A classic that won't go out of style.
