Am I being realistic?

I have found that everyone here is more than happy to help someone spend their money- but nobody here wants to see anyone suckered.

Meh ... there are a few people who can go f#@k themselves.

Welcome to the forum! I echo what all the extraordinary experts here have said.

1. Be patient
2. It's all about the condition of the watch
3. Most importantly, do not settle. If it ain't a hell yes, it's a hell no and walk away 😉

I can see his point, as there are several over priced, slippery worded sellers on the private For Sale forum that treat here like a dealers website.
Gone are the days where everyone on the FS forum were 100% reputable. Yes we have a good % of good sellers but care is still to be taken and ask a long term member via a PM if you want just to be sure.

Agreed. After a while you learn to read the signs in the FS section, lots of subtle hints which have been covered in other threads. But yes, I agree that if you don’t know the seller or have questions on a watch for sale, ask around privately.

Yes, I've done the 'walk away' bit. I'm into my third month of research...there may be many more! Thank you.

So, with possible potential fleecing even on this site, who do I go to to check a possible sale's credentials. I'm probably over-playing this danger but I'm in no hurry to buy and would be mortified if I were to discover I'd been duped.

Having seen several pics of pristine Constellations, I'm now focusing my efforts in that direction. The idea of a 168.004 or 168.010 in dome dial sound just the ticket date notwithstanding. Does that sound likely or possible?

...and thanks for all your useful comments!

You have just entered the community, slow down and take your time to understand how things work. Develop relationships, pay attention to subtleties and nuances. As noted above, you can ask questions about watches for sale by PM. In principle, you can even ask publicly in a separate thread, but that's delicate. If blatantly false claims are made in a listing, they are usually corrected. Prices are not commented upon publicly. Note who "likes" a listing. Pay attention to positive comments, whether the listing is new or stale, price adjustments, etc. There is no algorithm, it is a group of people, all different. Over time if you participate and pay attention, you will come to understand the personalities. Read the contributions of various members, look at their "reviews" as buyers and sellers in the relevant sub-forum.

If you see a watch that tickles your fancy, check the seller profile & reviews section and see what others have experienced with that particular seller. In the search function you can enter their handle in the keyword and check just that sub-section.

If they have good feedback over a period of time, then you can feel more confident about the seller (always buy the seller, not just the watch).

Next is to look at not just number of “likes” the listing has received, but also who liked it. Many veteran members will like a listing based on the watch itself, or the seller if they are friendly with them. It’s not always the gold standard, but there are some members who will like a listing and that’s enough for me to know the watch itself is a good example, the price is decent for value and the seller is credible- not a rule, but an strong indicator.
Lastly, if you have doubts ask via PM another member what they think. We all make connections here, however subtle, and if a member you reach out to doesn’t know the watch well, they may know someone who does.
And if all else fails, ask me. If I don’t know what you need to know, I may know someone who does.

@Dan S beat me to it

Thanks so much. Expect to hear from me at some point in the near future if that watch appears (both of you!).

Just reviving this thread to let anyone know who can help me, that I'm continuing to scour the landscape for a 14381 done dial in ss. I'm in regular pm contact with a member who is giving me very patient and detailed guidance to the extent that 6 months into my search, nothing quite right has shown up but a lot that's wrong has. I know 'that' piece will eventually appear but it does seem to me that there's a lot more rubbish than quality on offer...or am I being too picky? It remains an intriguing exploration but one that requires great patience!

Couple of months on and I've finally pulled the trigger. I had been looking for a 14381 reference but happened upon this handsome 14393 and couldn't resist. Without the guidance I've received here I would have been very lost. As it is, I have a watch of my own vintage (or one year out to be precise) and at a reasonable price; I couldn't be happier! Thanks especially to Philip who's put up with my incessant questions for months; I'll leave you alone now...at least until I decide I need another.

It took you 8 months to hunt down your first vintage watch? Impressive to say the least. I think we have found the most patient man in the world!

Congrats! I like it. When you get a chance, you should share some photos in natural light.

I didn't feel very patient...just an obsessive perfectionist? Anyway, it was worth the wait!

Here are a couple in better light...though still very amateur. By the way, I'm on the look out for a decagonal or scalloped crown to match its 1960 vintage. If anyone knows where I might pick one up I'd be very grateful.
