A sad day for my “birth year” Speedy.

It is only a 'grail' for a few. If you did not like it there is nothing to feel bad about other then a couple of years later you could have sold it for more $. But think of the favor you did for the buyer 😉

Being born in 1957, there was no chance whatsoever of me getting a birth year Speedmaster so in 2017 I settled for a Speedmaster ‘57 Co-Axial for my 60th birthday.

That’s maybe better than what I did, because I couldn’t afford a 1962 speedmaster. So I settled for a birth year Speedmaster Pro that was built when I was 14 years old (76).

@rkny18 - why don't you keep the Speedmaster because it's a lovely thing and it might date to when you were a toddler (so it's been in the wild all your life that you could ever remember), and get a Seiko as a birth-year watch instead? That way, you can satisfy your desire for a watch that's the same age as you, and relieve your Speedy of the disappointment that it's not that one.

If you see any vintage Seiko, their serial number (on the case back) has the format YMxxxx where Y is the year in the decade the watch was made, and M the month in that year. Since most watches made in 1968 would have been long gone from the market by 1978, it means anything 60s that starts 8 is in the running.

Example (not mine - I've only just clocked that all of my Seikos are either <=66 or >=69):

8 = 1968
0 = October (1-9 would be Jan-Sep, N & D I'm sure you can guess)

You have no idea when the parts were made incl case, dial and hands. They could be years old. I just don't get this birthyear fetish. You had a great watch in your eyes until you found out the Omega records state a later date, and now it is not desireable any longer. This illogic escapes me. A 'sad day' for you.

first world problems,
btw i am year 68 too,
and all the things i love and collect from hifi gear to classic cars or bikes, and watches,... are from 69 to 76
mean nothing, i have a nice coupe, it is 71, i must get rid of it immediately
but, and but, if i would take this seriously i would simply shut up, the guy asked for it, the majority is saying..”nonsense, wear and enjoy it” and he keeps fighting, the typical case of a guy that asks for advise, and then as he doesnt like the answers, ....again, ridicuolus

What would YOU do? Wear it and get over it, or sell it and move on?

I have a new suggestion. Buy a 1968 Geneve. They're easy enough to come by in good condition and not expensive. Now you own a birth year watch. You can now stop thinking of the Speedmaster in that way and start appreciating it as a lovely vintage piece in its own right.

WOOOHOOO!!! This just in....

------------

Dear Mr. K*******

Thank you for your e-mail. After having checked again, we can confirm that indeed it is a typing error.

We will send out the corrected extract today, hoping that it will reach the OMEGA-Boutique in Chicago as soon as possible, where you can pick it up.

We apologize for the inconvenient.

Kind regards

Told you so! Told you so!

Now to all those who say it doesn't matter and he should just settle for less. Shame on you!

Haha. I’m grateful for all the input, but especially to Eugene for suggesting I contact Omega to verify. Thanks everyone!

Well, @eugeneandresson has all the data that suggested it was a 1968, so I doubt the typo was them changing 1967 to a 1969, so it will be a 1968.

EDIT THE TITLE >> Omega snafu almost ruins "birth year Speedy", relief in sight

And the Omega world is a little more at peace with itself.

Does the extract have the production date or just the delivery date on it? Perhaps the production date was '68!

Trying to find a positive in the story besides the one of having a beautiful vintage Speedy on your wrist!

I must admit, I have never understood the whole birth year thing. Glad it worked out for you though.

Yesterday I heard a story from a speedy collector on behalf I am selling 15 speedies. He has an N.O.S. ST71 from first owner. It comes with box and papers. They get extracts for all of their watches. He just received a totally non matching EoA for this NOS first owner watch. He told me two years later than date of sale. They also had a 2998-1 that Omega could not verify a couple of years ago (I know about the missing files for some range of movement numbers etc) and now they all of the sudden could verify it. So my guess is that or that they find additional info and/or that its just work done by humans and we are all human and make mistakes

Personally I have my birth year speedy with a purchase receipt of my birth year. Somehow I find that more interesting than a not 100% sure production date, movement and case marriage date or shipping date. I think I only would change it for a EoA with birthday instead of year. ATMO coolest is a watch with a purchase receipt sold/bought one your birthdate.
