Unless it was for technical reasons, I feel Omega missed the boat by not fitting the 321 in the SS 50th anniversary.

It would be a disservice to the masses if they put the movement it in a platinum 50th anniversary. A celebration for the rich.

To add I can see the 3861 replacing the 1861 in the standard Speedmaster professional. It would give the watch Master Chronometer Certification in line with the rest of the Omega range, and further allow Omega to charge more for their best selling watch.

OB told me that 321 watches will have limited production due to their being individually hand-made, and that they will represent a considerably higher tier pricing compared with the 3861, etc. watches. So I don’t believe they will be in the same price range as current Speedys, even the 321/SS version. Hope to be proved wrong nevertheless. I can definitely see the 321 in a platinum version of the 50th though, that would make sense and fit with what I was told.

Am I the only one more excited about Omega putting the new 3861 coaxial master chronometer movement in regular production Speedmasters?

It seems like a true advancement.
The 3861 is NOT an advancement to many people who want to live in the 1960's with their dreams of a column wheel chronograph of that era being the gold standard.

Don’t understand mystique of the 321. I had one for a couple of years. It wasn’t more accurate, my arm didn’t glow from a special power of enlightenment.

Guess I never drank the Kool-Aid.

Speedmaster professional is not their best selling watch. Seamaster line is way more popular. And 50% of all omega watches sold are female models.

Fair enough, although I am not so sure that's necessarily been the situation for the majority of the last 50 years. Lets just say it's the brands most iconic watch.

In any case, all the more reason why omega may consider an update to the Speedmaster professional's movement,

But it clearly is an advancement over the std 861/1861 though isn’t it? I think even those that pine for the 321 see advancement there.

The new 321 gonna be a "new" Ed White made of steel.
I think that’s quite a good guess. They have already done the CK2915, and a couple of CK2998 versions (FOIS, etc) so in the straight lugs that only leaves the EW, all 3 iterations of which look pretty similar. I do think it’s likely to be in platinum though since that would justify the biggest mark up, and 950 plat is only 74% of the cost of 18k gold at present yet often has a premium over gold when purchased as jewellery. A win-win for Omega if they put it out at $30-$40k, though with that in mind they could spring a surprise at put it out in plat at $20k where it would sell like hot cakes. A faithful EW re-edition in steel, even with the 321 movement wouldn’t kook all that different from the FOIS so may struggle to justify the (at a wild guess) $10k premium over that watch.

But as usual probably omega will do something that keeps it from being a super perfect EW rendition like, put 'swiss made' on top of dial marks or whatnot...

If we are to have a new version of a Moonwatch with the 321 then let's have it in a SS watch that many can afford, not in Platinum or any other precious metal which would make it for just for a small minority. I have no issues with a homage to earlier watches but please not a limited edition which will just get all the flippers signing up for something they have no interest in other than for making money.

Oh goody....we are on to a new theme. We are done with the all gold Speedmaster, and beaten the Apollo 11 steel/gold version to death, so it is now time to laser focus on the new kid on the block, the mystical 321 movement reintroduction.

Exactly lets talk about future

I was at an OB technology and materials event recently. What if we see a ceramic EW sized case? Display caseback is almost for certain to show off the prized 321. With production numbers around 2000 we are unfortunately going to see something more exotic than SS. Ceramic would be another way to bring a 321 in line with their current premium sport line.

I don't think they will go that way. The kind of buyers who crave the 321 aren't the same as those that want the latest and greatest wonder materials like ceramic and sapphire. Materials which, though very strong can and do crack and chip with disastrous consequences since neither can be repaired. No IMO the target market for a low volume 321 movement piece are the same folks who currently collect Pre-Moon Speedmasters, Racing, Soleil or UM dials and gold BA 145.022 pieces. That isn't to say that the 321 release may definitely won't have a sapphire crystal, Omega have shown resolve in pushing that but I think they will draw the line with the use of ceramic on this one.

I've just re-read the Omega press blurb on the 321, that states that there is a special department of Swiss Gnomes who's sole job is to build the movements, assemble the watches and bracelets. All of this unfortunately suggests something very expensive, which is not what I had hoped for 🙁

Is your EW for sale 😀😀😀
No, sir...I recently picked it up at Hooters in downtown St. Louis, MO on 14MAY19 and I’m wearing it almost all the time... @M'Bob had voiced that he would like “dibs” so I made sure I had his “dibs” documented.

Pick up day of my birth year 1964 EW from seller @Darlinboy at Hooters in downtown St. Louis, MO on 14MAY19...
