Unrelated but slightly related, recently commissioning a platinum engagement ring I learned that Pt950 here is sold at quite a premium. It's like a niche alloy, while pure platinum was trading at 30-40$'s per gram I paid around $120 per gram for Pt950, didn't mind much since I was expecting to buy only 2 grams but the end result weighing nearly 5 grams - I wished I bought a goner Pt950 ladies Omega and melted it for the ring instead of paying such an outrageous price for an alloy

Pt950 is often an alloy of platinum and palladium. Platinum is lower in price than gold, and palladium is less again (about 35% of the current gold prices. Producing jewellery items in platinum alloys presents special challenges. Much higher temperature processes being one of them. That likely contributes to the price you paid.

Another consideration might be that the alloy might contain iridium which is pricier than gold. Quite often, platinum alloy items might be marked platinum/pal (palladium), or platinum/irid (iridium). This will also reflect in the price you paid.

While rhodium is only used to electroplate jewellery articles, it currently is double the price of gold.

I’d say that’s just a product of the spread, in that a jeweller isn’t going to sell ‘virgin’ platinum 950 at scrap price. Nothing to do with the make up of the alloy.

Scrap prices quoted are usually for pt950, not pure platinum.
