That leaves the nasty telephone number scratched on the caseback.

Maybe it's a military issued watch and that's the serial number! Just throw a 'PAF' on there, there's another +10K.

Looking forward to seeing how it ends up.

I do love finds like this and seeing the journey they go through. With a pristine example, it is what it is. Little cosmetic work required and possibly not suitable for daily wear, given current values. But with these, you could give it to five different collectors and end up with very different watches, based on what route they decide to take. The best part is, it's a wearable watvh at the end of it.

There hasn't been much comment regarding this 2998-2 "fixer upper" which sold https://www.ebay.com/itm/162096652901 a few days ago.

While not having the dial quality of the OP 2998-2 (it is brownish however) and needing a few parts replaced ( register hands and a better base 1000, if available) still, in my opinion, represented a very good value at $18,100 which included the lollipop chrono and a "cosmic, ghost" base 1000 bezel.

In the interest of full disclosure, I thought it such a good value that I ended up buying it although I was very surprised at the low price.

Very nice! I think it was a tremendous bargain

Good question David. I haven't received the watch yet, but I don't think I'll have the dial relumed. I expect the remaining lume to be radium and I think a 2998-2 dial should remain with radium lume. To my knowledge, the only way to relume is to wash off all the old lume so a relume would be spell the end of any radium.

Regarding the hands, I have a set of straight lume 2998 hands and leaf sub register hands to potentially swap. I think the straight lume is more appropriate for a 2998-2. I hear you about the bezel. I might leave it original or perhaps replace it with a slightly better base 1000 that I have. I suspect both the dial and bezel will look better in the flesh than in the seller pics.

That leaves the nasty telephone number scratched on the caseback. I don't mind tasteful engravings but this doesn't look very appealing. Will wait and see.
no, you can relume and leave the old lume. so you will have the Geiger count and restore the vintage look..... kind regards. achim

gemini4, my congrats for this nice 2999 lollipop. I think you will never regret that you pulled the trigger on that one, even if a better one should show up to you one day (which I doubt 😁). In that case, well, then you have two great 2998's

Very nice detective work @flyingout. Not many dealers, other than the Davidoff Brothers, could shell out $52,100 for the watch, clean up the dial, upgrade the bezel (another $10k+) and put it back out for sale at near $100k??

Funny thing is the watch was originally list as a BIN for $47,000 with no takers.

Good catch @flyingout . Anyone know which eBay sale they got the bezel from?

I didn't have to. Last week I got a email alert from Chrono24. Watch is 95000 CHF. Didn't realize it was the eBay watch.

Were you alerted to the price of the -1 also? The -6 is listed at $28,925.
