These bids may or may not be shills.

However if the watch is correct it is currently cheap.

It is missing the BASE1000 bezel and the hands are (obviously) relumed, and the dial has the bubbling on the subdial.

However all these characteristics have been on 2998's recently sold for a lot more, and some did not have the appeal this one does.

With all that said, plus the Hodinkee article, this one hits $50k possibly before its all over??

The trouble is, ebay is a jungle, especially for high value items - neither the seller nor buyer are given any support or security at all by ebay.

However this watch if presented by one of the three better auction houses would easily eclipse $50k.

So eBay might scare away all the legitimate big spenders??

...at least you know a B&M auction house will only rip you off through incompetence.
With Ebay it could be some 15 year old kid in a Russian Republic.

That said I do know of some hefty deals started through ebay, but usually finished by direct contact.

There hasn't been much comment regarding this 2998-2 "fixer upper" which sold https://www.ebay.com/itm/162096652901 a few days ago.

While not having the dial quality of the OP 2998-2 (it is brownish however) and needing a few parts replaced ( register hands and a better base 1000, if available) still, in my opinion, represented a very good value at $18,100 which included the lollipop chrono and a "cosmic, ghost" base 1000 bezel.

In the interest of full disclosure, I thought it such a good value that I ended up buying it although I was very surprised at the low price.

Also, I still believe that both of these 2998-2s have "long hour" hands more commonly found on a 2915-3. If you look closely, you will notice that the neck, where the hand attaches to the center spindle, is narrower than the short side of the triangular lume. This is only apparent on the 2915-3 "long hour"

Seeing that a Base1000 is a $10k bezel, that was a good buy 😀

A base 1000 bezel can be worth $10,000, see below

I'm afraid the only way the above 2998-2's base 1000 is worth $10k is for someone to buy it from me for that price 😀

I think thats a good buy.

IMO however, I wouldn't swap out that bezel. It fits the watch perfectly.

Given that you already know the dial has been cleaned slightly and the hands relumed by the seller, what are your plans?

I think this could be the ideal 2998. It's not perfect so not worries about knocking it about, plus if you so desired, you can relume without affecting value. Pretty much the perfect daily wearer.

Good question David. I haven't received the watch yet, but I don't think I'll have the dial relumed. I expect the remaining lume to be radium and I think a 2998-2 dial should remain with radium lume. To my knowledge, the only way to relume is to wash off all the old lume so a relume would be spell the end of any radium.

Regarding the hands, I have a set of straight lume 2998 hands and leaf sub register hands to potentially swap. I think the straight lume is more appropriate for a 2998-2. I hear you about the bezel. I might leave it original or perhaps replace it with a slightly better base 1000 that I have. I suspect both the dial and bezel will look better in the flesh than in the seller pics.

That leaves the nasty telephone number scratched on the caseback. I don't mind tasteful engravings but this doesn't look very appealing. Will wait and see.
