With dust cover. Relumed. Chrono now working. Yet last service unknown.

Amazing. Lots of unscrupulous people out there. Interesting to note that he managed to make the case look worse than before - must have been occupied with presenting the dial as good as he could.

hey guys, with your hypocritical attitude you will never pull the trigger on an early 2998 I am afraid 馃榿 Those watches are not Pateks lying in the safe from the beginning of their life. They were extensivly worn and also they got repairs. To a certain extent this is part of their charme to me and also part of the game in collecting vintage Speedmasters. Both watches discussed here in this thread are fine examples of early Speemasters having some weak points but collectible anyway. My opinion, no more 馃槜

I'd have to say I agree.
Not show winners but pretty easily made to look good examples.
Also, show me a better one for sale at an affordable price?

I hear what you guys are saying but personally I'd rather have a "lesser" reference in better condition.

I understand the point. It is really a question of personal taste and preference. I have two or three really grade 1 condtion watches in my collection and I never wear them because I know, every dent and every sign of real life will diminuish their value. It somehow makes me sad everytime I refuse to wear them.

This does not mean of course that I do not hunt watches with as many original parts as possible. But to me the discussed 2998-2 lollipop Speedmaster ist not undesireable only because it shows not the necessary BASE1000 bezel or the other one shows a main hour hand, that might be rather seen on the (even more rare) 2915-3 in its late version (which I actually do not think is the case here on the discussed watch).

" This Speedy, though, goes beyond offering correct original parts; it can boast a sublime tropical dial, taking a brownish hue that goes so well with the dark patina of the lume. Furthermore, the seller offers a very advanced description of his watch (notably explaining the early bezel), proving that he is himself a Speedy enthusiast."

Hodinkee article seems to imply that the 2998-2 bezel is original and correct, which it is not. ::facepalm1::

Article ignores the dial blemish as well.

" This Speedy, though, goes beyond offering correct original parts, you get the special bonus of questionable parts, adding immense perceived value."

"BECAUSE THIS IS ONE OF THE LAST -2 IS VERY POSSIBLE THAT IT HAD LEFT FACTORY WITH THE "DON BEZEL" TACHYMETRE 500 INSTEAD OF BASE 1000" from the ebay description

Is that a possible scenario?

Second time Hodinkee has shot itself in the foot on Speedy's recently (after trying to sell the 145.012 / 105.012 mashup). They don't have much skin in the game this time but just shows that the lure of a lollipop and tropical dial makes people forget to look at the details... except for you wonderfully detailed SOB's. Hence my appreciation for OF. 馃憤

Spin indeed. The bezel was spun the wrong way, then it got spun back the right way (hey! Is spun a word 馃榾).
Even if it was a base 1000 bezel it would not be the original one, way too black for that washed out dial!

So the question is how much market willing to pay for an imperfect 2998-2 lollypop hand? We'll see in few days.
