·I've heard through a semi-reliable source that it's all about the money. Lawson brings in quite a bit more than Tsunoda. This was a big reason Checko was able to hang on so long.
But yeah, Lawson's likely on a short leash.
In the end, you're right that money played a part based on rumors RBR came back to Honda asking for the money that was on offer last year to swap him back in for Japan.

·Toto is a 1/3rd owner of the team (with Merecedes-Benz and INEOS each owning 1/3rd). He's not going anywhere.

·Well i think Yuki's performance is very encouraging as not only was it closer to Max than Perez was at a fraction over a 10th of a second. But it is on another planet compared to Lawson, so much for all Lawson's big talk about being better than Yuki. I noticed that Lawson also couldn't beat his complete rookie team mate Hadjir. Sorry but Lawson's comments and attitude just really rubbed me up the wrong way this season and it will take quite a bit for me to like him again.

·Unfortunately qualifying didn't work out for Yuki as it looks like he went in the wrong direction on set up but I still have hopes for him in the race. What I realised is I have forgotten to mention just how impressed I have been by Antonelli overall and especially here at Suzuka managing to qualify just behind Russell is very impressive IMO. I think so far and I know it's only 2 races in with us now seeing the 3rd race he is the standout rookie. I really thought Toto had lost his mind when he announced him as the Mercedes 2nd driver but it turns out he knew something most of us didn't. As much as sometimes I really don't like Max I have to admit his abilities in the far from best car are really something else.

[*] It's a horse race run yearly at an old Grand Prix venue. I hope giving the result is not a spoiler for anyone here.

Hardly a spoiler. I had a fiver each way on the winner and also the 5th place so came out around £200 up!
Both Yuki and Lawson are making Checo looks good in hindsight. It just reinforces that the second seat at RB is poison. I blame MV for that but while he’s still delivering the goods it will remain the same. Bearman was the stand out for me over one lap today, very impressive in that car. Oh and Hamilton looks to be a busted flush. Consistently slower than supposed no2 man Leclerc. I’ll be very surprised if he’s still in the seat at the half way point as I suspect he’ll walk eventually.

·Love Suzuka, but didn’t love the racing (or lack thereof). So much for the ground-effect rule set making it easier to follow a car in front.
Kudos to Max - I didn’t think he’d be able to hold off Lando and Oscar for the entire race even factoring in the nature of the circuit. Surprised McLaren didn’t try for the over cut with Lando; it seems like that would have been their best opportunity for the win.
Once again disappointed that Stroll is Canada’s current contribution to the grid. At least JV was on hand subbing for Martin Brundle; it was a welcome reminder that not all Canadian drivers suck 😁

I wonder what Giles would have made of the modern cars. It would be interesting for the fans to see another Death or Glory driver on the grid now that Max has calmed down from his early days. Not so good for corporate execs' liking though 🙁

·Because of the processional nature and lack of wear on the newly laid tarmac the field was still very closed up and an attempt to undercut would have dropped Lando behind too many cars that would still be very difficult to overtake. Like Monaco grid position is everything at Suzuka.
I wonder what Giles would have made of the modern cars. It would be interesting for the fans to see another Death or Glory driver on the grid now that Max has calmed down from his early days. Not so good for corporate execs' liking though 🙁
To clarify - I posited an over cut may have helped Lando gain position on Max. Assuming the McLaren was faster than the RBR, Lando putting in a few quick laps in clear air after Max had pitted may have been enough to get him ahead.
I have no doubt that Gilles would have done well regardless of the nature of his machinery 😁
