He knows Mercedes isn’t competitive. Ferrari won’t be either so why not? Bigger question is who is going to replace him? 2026 before Mercedes has a chance in my book.
Supposedly one of the Mercedes engineers Lewis has a good relationship with flagged the 2022 Mercedes design direction as a problem early on and continued fighting to get rid of it until finally signing with Ferrari for 2025, he’ll be there with Lewis for his first year.

Why won't Ferrari be competitive? They've had a fast car and won races. It's technical leadership that's been their downfall last year right?

Something else on the competitiveness front.

Mercedes and Honda have both had great success with a split turbo arrangement, in other words a compressor and turbine at opposite ends of the engine with a shaft running through the V.

2026 engine rules BAN the split turbo, as there is now a maximum distance between the two. Ferrari are already on par with Mercedes and Honda engine wise with a non-split turbo, and have been ahead at various times recently on power. This is even with the disadvantage of a non-split turbo, which will be what everyone else has to use from 2026. That puts Ferrari in a really nice position power unit wise.

2026 engine is all new. I don’t think the split turbo is much of an issue for the ground up new engines everyone has to build.

I think Lewis will regret this move in 2026.

Ferrari does not have the best record with tactics and strategy. MB is pretty flawless on that, and a huge key to Lewis’s consistency last year.

I’m a huge Ferrari fan. They may win a few, but Adrian Newey won’t be stopped this year. He’s had too much time to perfect his design.

It isn’t all new, it’s an evolution of the current regs with the combination engine being the least changed component, although it will undergo some changes for the new fuel, hybrid and economy requirements

You guys think Albon will be a flight risk now? Lewis' move opens up a seat and unless Williams' car this season is a huge improvement, I can't see him staying if Mercedes gives him an offer

Will be fascinating to see who Merc target to replace Lewis. Promote from within, steal more young talent or a more experienced head to lead the team?

I doubt Mercedes will tap Albon.

I think Seb knows something we all don’t.

“Getting ready for the next season.”

**😁 Said in jest. I don’t think he’s coming back.

Highly unlikely that Lewis could win a championship in one or two years, it just doesn't work like that. Vettel couldn't do it, it took Schumacher a while. Every driver would like to drive for Ferrari, even Max, on some level, would like to do it. Unless you are the current F1 championship driver the second best job in F1 is being one of.the two Ferrari drivers.

I reckon Lewis knows he's not going to win at MB again, so why not take a flyer with Ferrari. He won't win a championship but he may be able to set them on a better path than they are now. It's like Moto GP's Marc Marquez, one of the great riders but always connected to Repsol Honda, until they became uncompetitive and he jumped this year to Ducati. Lots of reasons why these things happen, especially in the twilight of one's career.

I reckon a young driver named Fernando is worth calling up

Peter Windsor's next live chat is tomorrow evening -- going to be a lively one!

And did he know something when he selected that photo?
Edit: ah-ha that picture has been changing through the day, still going to be an interesting show though.

Lewis seems to bail when the going gets tough. May be his super power.

Albon is still a RedBull driver with Helmut Marko as his manager. He was somehow parked at Williams which is in the MB sphere of influence.

of course we’ll all know that Seb will return to MB lol… well if Kimi turns it down 😉.

Hamilton will be 40 years old by 2025.it’s Ferrari that’s taking the risk. I personally think it’s a great move for F1; it just a pity it hasn’t come sooner.
