What I've read and seen on some YouTube explanations about the new '26 specs......it looks like we are in for some dreary racing. 50% of the power has to come from the batteries (vs. about 16% now) which means drivers have to do a lot of regenerative braking to keep the batteries charged, probably lower speeds overall. The ICE component will produce a lot less power than before, something around 500 hp. F1 still has this 2030 goal of being carbon neutral. Anyway, like when they changed specs in 2014 the team that manages the new power plant requirements best will be the leader until the others catch up. Last time it was Mercedes, this time, who knows.

I've read that some fear the cars may be at full speed halfway down a long straight.

Sounds like less racing on the track and more races decided by boffins in the pits........dreary!
Too much bullshit to go wrong!

MotoGP is greatly changing the specs for 2027 season. Less displacement (1000 cc to 850 cc), probably slower speeds, GPS from all teams to be shared after each session, 100% non fossil origin fuel. Sounds similar to F1, less racing via more technology. At least we have 2026 season under the current regs.

I guess I don't really care how fast they go. I care a lot more about the competitive nature of racing. If they pass a bunch, I can deal with slower speeds.

This is a good point.

Cool to see Cadillac in F1
But why? Really don't understand what they think to achieve

Cadillac went full bore into the EV scheme, more so than the other GM divisions (Chevrolet, Buick and GMC). With F1 going more and more electric (50/50 from 2026) I think they thought this would be a good way to showcase their technology in the EV sphere. Don't know how this will all work out because GM, and Ford, are now backing away from EVs, too much money was being lost trying to sell products that the public weren't ready to accept.

I think the main thing is getting more US fans in, especially now that they have 3 GPs there, HAAS has never really galvanised support from American fans, probably because they were always a bit of a jobber team. If Cadillac can actually be a credible American team fighting near the front I can imagine they'd do well out of it, and they do have a solid pair of drivers and GM backing so it could go decently with time.

Whether a majority of US fans will actually wear Cadillac merch over Ferrari, that I'd doubt a bit, most kids aren't hoping for Cadillac merch for christmas

Does Cadillac still have that "old man" vibe in the the US that it had in decades prior or have models like the Blackwing sort of changed that perception?

I think their focus is more cutting edge technology now, at least as far as GM is concerned. The big, bad Escalade is very popular with the Hollywood and music crowd.....lot's of influencers there. As I remember GM told their Cadillac dealers they either had to buy in to the EV thing, or exit the business. Many franchisers couldn't make the numbers work dollar wise and they left the scene. There are about 200 stand alone Caddy dealers in the US, and about 365 multi-brand GM dealerships. That's not a whole lot, imo.

As they go down the F1 path, I wonder if they might go and do something like a higher end mid-engined car based on C8 or something but with better quality, more carbon etc. They're deep in sports cars already with some success there too and have at least dabbled on the concept side in the past: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadillac_Cien

The C8 is genuinely an astonishingly good car, the first time I've respected and loved the engine in a GM product, but the interior is still a very GM product and lower quality than most competitive gamers' sim-rigs, so there's definitely room for a C8-like car without the cheapness and corner cutting as a true halo product.

But yea... it might end up being a V6 hybrid like the Ford GT Ecoboost.
