Hamilton is a good driver, no doubt about it.
But he is also the luckiest SOB on the grid.
Swings and roundabouts. Don't you remember all the ERS, hydraulic and engine failures he had in 2016? There were something like 5 DNFs that were due to mechanical faults while Rossberg suffered ... one?

You sure about 2016?
He only had 2 DNF's as well as only 2 times he did not make podium in 2016.
So 4 times total he finished lower than 3rd.
I am not recalling this from memory but instead looked at the race results.
All I'm saying is...he catches breaks.

I like F1 but far from an expert or aficionado. I have only been watching since the hybrid era started. but from a blockhead fan's perspective it seems like Hamilton is a superior driver when he has the best car on the grid but simply very good when the playing field is equal. Am I totally off base? (likely)

Depends on if you ask a Hamilton fan lol

Seriously though, yeah, he's good.
Better than Seb or any other historically great driver? Hard to say.
The cars definitely have something to do with it...and like I said, some luck. (and dare I say the FIA's favor in HAM's case?)
I always thought it would be interesting to put Hammy in Seb's car and visa versa.

That would be such a good tie-breaker.
Say they both finish the season with equal points, then fans vote for the circuit, and then the 2 of them race for the final time in the others car.
Or, they just go karting somewhere lol.

I'm not always sure about yesterday, let alone 2016 😉

This is an interesting read, though: http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/24...w-unlucky-has-lewis-hamilton-been-this-season

I'll be totally honest: I like the kid. Yes, he whines. All (OK, most, but I can remember laughing at Prost, Senna and particularly Mansell all coming up with excuses. Mansell was hilarious in his time) racing drivers always have. You've got to be in the right place to catch a break, though. I'm quite convinced that Raikkonen sits back and gives up; Vettel does too when things go wrong (though just as often he makes some great charges); Hamilton just keeps going and going til something breaks or he loses his head. If you're still in the race and still going fast, you can capitalise on anyone else's mistakes. That said, think about what Hamilton said about Bottas in a number of the interviews after Azerbaijan - he was downright apologetic about winning that one.

One thing I will say about the German GP - it was pretty obvious from lap 20-ish onwards that Hamilton's team had gone with the idea of running right the way through til it rained and capitalising on making one tire change. As it happened, it rained less than expected. It rained later than expected. They got lucky. But there was a plan and it just happened that the plan coincided with Vettel's error.

He had used up his allocation of PU's by around 2/3's of the season. The engine failure in Malaysia was probably the most well known but in the first 6 or 7 races he suffered grid penalties in half of them. Naturally that allowed Nico to accumulate a bunch of points. The Malaysia PU failure was on a fresh PU too when he was ahead by 30 seconds just cruising around.

All the top drivers catch breaks when they win the WDC. You don't win without a combination of some luck and skill.

Ferrari International Assistance working to favour Hamilton? 😉

I'm also Team Hamilton. I drive an AMG car, so I naturally root for Mercedes AMG. Of course I'm going to root for Hamilton since he's been using Mercedes power from the beginning.

It's hard to filter out car vs driver sometimes. Hamilton has pretty consistently outperformed his teammates and was even on points when he was a teammate with ALO.

The only true way to compare drivers is to compare teammates. Ferrari are the only team that run a "number one" driver, so comparisons there are skewed. I do remember Hamilton's first season at McLaren and Alonso was definitely put out by how well Hamilton drove. Verstappen is the only comparable rookie I remember seeing, but it seems that he's not mellowing into becoming a more rounded driver and that's a real shame. Hamilton has had some very talented teammates (Button, Rosberg and Alonso) and, with the exception of his first season, he's not really been out-performed by any of them. We'll never get to see Vettel and Hamilton paired because of their mutual dislike, so we'll never get a direct comparison.

I think you're mixing up Vettel with Nico. Lewis doesn't like Nico but he doesn't mind Vettel. He'll talk to Vettel after races even when Vettel beats him. He wont say anything to Nico after a race.

The British have the perfect word for Hamilton: he's a twat. A talented twat to be sure, but a twat nonetheless.

True. Don't care how good a driver he is (mostly the car), he is a cuck and a bad sportsman. Senna would be disappointed.

Senna the great sportsman who basically said he had sex with his teammate’s girlfriend. If he raced in today’s social media environment he’d be just as much of an ass as Lewis.

Lol. Trophy looked horrible. Worse than the French gorilla trophy.
First thought that came to my mind about that trophy: You're joking, right? Where is the real one? Is that a kindergarten font?

Wow, a great season so far in my books.

Seb was unlucky with his late crash but I am sure he will bounce back...I felt he handled the post race interviews quite well.

Hamilton did a great charge but nothing mega spectacular for the F1 history books.

I wonder for how long Bottas will retain motivation during the season...he does seem to have a cool head.

The Ferraris are looking very strong on all tracks and Red Bulls will be strong again in low speed circuits. This is still a wide open challenge for the WDC and WCC

Oh and ref some of the Senna comments...if you saw the incredible charity work he did in Brazil without seeking recognition and how much he battled for driver safety, I think you would reach the conclusion that he was a more complex dude than just the ruthless almost zealot like competitor we often saw on the track.

I do find it funny how we expect F1 drivers to be laid back and generally super nice chaps during race weekends, when they are required to perform at extreme levels of intense competiton.

Here on the OF there are Squirrels known to throw tantrums just at the slightest oblique reference to a Speedmaster😉😁

I think every driver needs to be like Kimi.

Or Daniel. I am really starting to like his attitude. The only negative is the shoe thing.
