@TexOmega showed pictures of a family watch, a picture of his father in uniform, and a picture of his grandfather in uniform.
This brought to a photo that I have of my maternal grandfather, taken circa 1895. This was when he was a constable in the London Metropolitan Police, and. Member of the police brass band. He played a cornet, and he played before Queen Victoria in London’s Crystal Palace. I have his cornet.
The photo shows him wearing a Albert pocket watch chain, and I can only assume he was wearing his English lever, fusee pocket watch in his pocket. This pocket watch is no longer in the family dammit! I have a pocket watch chain that was his, although it is clearly not the chain he wears in the picture. The chain I have is a Waldemar style, and being 9-karat gold, it would not be the chain he was wearing in the picture.
After his carreer as a copper, he joined the British Army, and did a stint in South Africa, during the Boer War. By then he was married and had kids. He brought the whole family to a homestead in Sakatchewan in about 1908.
My grandfather:
His 9 karat pocket watch chain, a Victorian half sovereign, and 14-karat pen knife.
