The last couple of days I've been listening to Incubus's "The Odyssey." The first movement of this 4 movement work was composed for the Halo 2 soundtrack and very much sounds exactly like what you would expect on the Halo 2 soundtrack, but once the second movement starts it breaks into a full-on Progressive Rock boogie-woogie. The third movement pulls jazz elements into it, then manages to channel Pink Floyd, and the fourth movement starts with a double-drumming harmony that moves into some classic Incubus rock, and then from there a disharmonious guitar channels some Godspeed You! Black Emperor. There's some Nine Inch Nails inspired sound (stuff reminescent of "The Warmth" among others) thrown in as well for good measure.

I first listened to this years ago after Halo 2 came out. I was generally a fan of Incubus and a big fan of bands like Pink Floyd and Dream Theater. This was just so different than anything else I'd listened to by Incubus, it quickly became a favorite. Hadn't listened to it in years.

Especially movements 3 and 4 are truly something to listen to if you're into jam-session style Prog rock.

Buddy rich ::rimshot::

Amazing drummer. truly incredible. I was actually just watching this drum composition during one of Incubus' live shows right as you posted this. If you like drums, you might like it. Their drummer, Jose Pasillas, goes into a drum solo not unlike Buddy Rich's "Impossible" drum solo (happens right after the three-way drum off they are having at current time) Much shorter though. Buddy Rich is a legend.

This piece was on last night's program by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. The opening brass part was distinctive and very moving when heard live. Our seats were right down front.
