New Tull? I can’t listen completely yet but I hear Ian singing and the flute going. I need to process this.

Every time I put this on, I'm reminded of a long walk in the pissing rain in the early hours of the morning when I was at art college.

...and the batteries in my Walkman slowly fading...

Today, Jan 28, was release day (in the US) for the first studio Jethro Tull album since 2003, The Zealot Gene. Sounds like classic Tull. Ian Anderson will be 75 later this year, but still sounding fresh. Will need a few listens to get the full impact. Been a big fan of Jethro Tull since 1970.

You will have to forgive me as dates and time are a blur lately but right before covid turned everything upside down I took this job at an emergency shelter. It only opens during winter at a bit of a tough city not too far from me. At the time Ian was giving a speech in NYC about homelessness and food banks etc he has a charitable foundation he started. I’m right next door to NYC and he was making a brief stop here to speak and meet some elected officials. My director gave me her invite to the talk which was brief but Ian is very passionate to the cause. I partly remember some of the talk he said, is compassion for the homeless is reflected in “aqualung” and prior but much more involvement now. I didn’t get to see Tull until early 2000’s in the reunion tours. One time I won 3rd row tickets on a radio station thing and Ian and David Pegg the bass player made funny faces at me when I was right in front of them with binoculars. I am a bass player I was just trying the watch every move Pegg made. I wasn’t paranoid they were having a laugh at me as Pegg leaned down pointed at me and stuck out his tongue. I cant forget that show to this day.

So there was like a short time for us to meet Ian I just thanked him for his donation, complemented his dedication and very quickly related the binocular story which gave him a hell of a laugh he said “was I wearing tights, then looked at me and said, nah your too young you should have seen me in tights I looked great.” He looked at my work ID and said “thanks for your work man we are concerned this thing in China is gonna make things bad”. I said “TBH all I do is break up fights, pump people full of nalaxone and hope the ambulance comes on time I don’t see how it can get much worse.” (Little did I know)

So that’s it. My memory is shit but certain rare events are like instant replay sometimes. Mr. Anderson could easily be confused for a next door neighbor regular dude except this glint of something unique in his eyes. I posted one song from his new disc hoping to hear the rest soon.

Billy Strings covering the Grateful Dead's "Wharf Rat"....

Billy Strings - "Wharf Rat" from The Capitol Theatre - YouTube
Ah thank you amongst my favorite dead songs what a ballad Billy is amazing I’ve been listening to him when I found him by mistake on XM. I think the dude was born with a guitar in his hand. I was very upset when I found out the day after he did a show about 50 miles from me. Would have loved to see him small venue as well.

He's playing the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY 2/3, 2/4, 2/5, and 2/6. All shows are sold out, but tickets are available on StubHub. I was thinking of taking my wife for her birthday.

I got some decisions I told you about Jardine but Ringo is also coming around with his All Star Band in March and I’ve seen 5 or so iterations of his band. I think I saw the best Iko Iko ever performed with Dr. John tickling the ivories. I don’t know if it transcends on video but it was not possible to remain seated when they played this, the entire place was swaying. It was literally so intense I went to the concession stand and paid 13 bucks for two bottles of water after the song and knocked them back like they were water
