If you're ever in Tokyo here's a recommendation: Bar Martha - a Japanese “Listening Bar” - “where music comes first and talking a definite second.”

“I have never run a bar that has considered what the customer wants,” says Fukuyama tells us one evening at his bar. “People often say that the customer is always right, but I’m not confident that’s true.“I look at the customers and think ‘who is listening?’” says Fukuyama.

“Only 50 people can be in here at any one time. I often play music for the one person who is listening most intently. I think to myself, ‘How old are they? What would they want to listen to?’ I play something and watch for their reaction”

Son and missus celebrating 40 and 60 respectively. This calls for some respectable drink!

Christmastime means you should drink well. Wife and I are fans of cognacs and armagnacs. Right now in the wine room are two very aged armagnacs from 1970 (50 years in the barrel) and 1976 (45 years), a Hennessy XXO cognac and the cream of the crop, a decanter of Louis XIII. Sampled it two weeks ago at a special event and it blew us away, crazy expensive but as the small sign says on the window sill, "Enjoy Today, Someday You'll Miss It". Comes in an impressive package and the decanter is Baccarat crystal. Will open it up New Year's Eve to ring in the new year.
