It鈥檚 a thoughtful gift...

It鈥檚 not bad... just bad at the price... in a blind test I put it right behind double black... granted very different flavor profiles. I judged on nose, taste, and overall balance. I had no idea what it was or the whiskey in the test. I guessed it at a 60 dollar bottle or an 80 trying way to hard. The Double
Black I guessed was a JW from thenprofile but much better then black... I put it at $60 a bottle guessing JW price hike. At the end of the day both are great $50-55 range, at $150 for a blue... they are trading the name way to hard.

Up here in Canada its $300 CAD for the bottle. For the same money I can have 3 bottles of 8 year old Lagavulin.
If I did a blind taste with the blue I would price it around $30 to $40. Its extremely watered down, no nose, no legs.....Just nothing there.
They are defineltly great at marketing.

I pay about 45 for Lag 8. Nice dram.

Blue didn鈥檛 seem watered down or thin to me. Just smooth as it is theoretically made from older Whisky. This puts us into the single Malt vs Blend argument but I can write pages on that. Blends or judged a bit differently then single malts. Esp blends made from older stock like blue. Oddly if I remember correctly Lag is a major part of most JW blends.

I think I might not be the best person to judge JW Blue because I constantly drink Islay single malts and like we all know they are very flavourful and strong. All said, i think we can all agree that the Blue is extremely overrated and overpriced.

On a business trip to the other end of the country to a town called Ribe. If you ever visit Denmark I would strongly advice that you visit it. It dates back to the early medieval period around 700 AD and has a beautiful a very famous cathedral. On a restaurant eating lunch before my meeting tonight, drinking some local pilsner beer and reading Ian Flemming

And a couple of photos from Ribe

Blended scotch is blended scotch. Even the good stuff is awful. To some however it鈥檚 heaven.

Playing with a new recipe. Got the idea to try sorghum as a sweetener. It鈥檚 like molasses or honey with its own flavor, tad malty and Smokey, unique from molasses and honey.

So first attempt a basic old fashioned base... I call it the Old American.

In an old fashioned glass.
2oz Rye (using bulliet as it鈥檚 a known basic good rye)
1 heaping bar spoon of sorghum.

2 dash cherry bitters
1 dash walnut bitters ( needs the tart)

Add all together and stir to dissolve the sorghum, in the future I鈥檓 making a sorghum syrup with a little water to make it easier to dissolve.

Add Ice cube and enjoy.

:edit:

3dashes peychauds barrel aged bitters work better then the cherry walnut combo, keeps it American too boot!

Tiki.
Or, more appropriately, "exotic cocktails".

The never ending quest for original recipes, fine tuning and developing, searching for particular ingredients, picking up the coolest barware... Almost, almost, as fun as drinking.
Above: Pearl Diver, Zombie ( 1934 original recipe. Demerara 151 by Lemon Hart is a must ), and two swell mugs from Frankie's in Las Vegas.
These are some of Friday and Saturday's drinks. Work was a bear, yesterday.
