They added butterfly pea to gin? Hmm interesting, how does it taste?

When I was a kid (ok early teens) I got very ill drunk on Blue Curaco…. it was the only thing that night which we could raid in secret from the back of the drinks cabinet. Even now and even if something tastes great I start feeling blue when I see anything this colour...

Tasting notes please......
Rich ,opulent in my opinion...sweet,flowers and nuts flavors, cigars flavors too....The final is explosive, a long sweetness and pleasure...I am not an expert to describe very well this bottle...but it was a pleasure for the soul tasting it.

So I wanted to compare it to something for you, so we did a little tasting just now...

So the Bombay Sapphire used to be my “go to” gin in terms of large distillers. We tasted right to left, and with the Bombay neat the overwhelming taste was pure alcohol, and it wasn’t pleasant to drink straight.

By comparison the Empress 1908 was very smooth, with no harsh alcohol burn. I wouldn’t say that the botanicals are really in your face, but they are certainly there, with an undertone that I couldn’t quite put my finger on, but Jacqui said she felt it was almost a slight anise flavour.

The Dillon’s unfiltered is the most complex of the three by far, with a lot of botanical flavours present, and not necessarily dominated by juniper berry. It has some cardamom undertones that are really nice, and this is my favourite all time gin by far.

We mad some G&T’s with the Empress, and as noted when the pH goes acidic it turns purple...

Using Schweppes tonic, and some lemon that is my standard for these, the result is really nice. Too easy to drink actually...and almost a bit sweet, but not in an unpleasant way at all. Jacqui said she likes the Dillon’s more for G&T’s, and she likes the Empress more for Martinis. I’m easy either way...

😁

Cheers, Al

Al,

Thanks! Bombay’s my go to also, esp now as The Botanist has doubled in price recently! I’ll admit that neat it’s not the best nor for martinis.

I’ll have to check those other 2 gins out.

I’ve used butterfly pea extract for “magic trick cocktails” as the color change is dramatic and beautiful. You can buy it straight as an additive.

Try fever tree tonic it’s worth it!

Thanks again!

The Chablis was nice--very minerally--and quite inexpensive too. The Meursault is for tomorrow's smelt fry.

Well, last night I was drinking these - negronis - bad news on a “school night”, followed by a couple of glasses of Malbec ..... probably explains why this morning, I’m drinking water.

I don't often do cocktails but next to a rusty nail, Negronis are my poison of choice when the situation dictates. Good call :0)
….. I would say a Vodka expresso can give a lift if you are flagging.....

Never had a vodka espresso - sounds like a definite hair of the dog remedy... I’ll give it a try when the pub opens 😀

I found this burger and whiskey bar and had lunch. Decent Scotch collection, but have to go bourbon with a hamburger. I love America
