Do you guys think this watch is extract worthy?
Well I can tell you its approx age within a few months by the serial number... In this case you would only run an extract if something seems out of the ordinary. IE the serial did not resolves to being delivered from 1974 to Sept of 77.

I will try and get a serial number next week. I made a tentative attempt to open the caseback, but it didnt budge and I am worried I might slip and scratch it up.

Still running really well though, hasnt lost any time in a week.

You were going to take it to a watchmaker: why not let him take the back off for you? Alternatively you get yourself to an online shopping site and buy one of those case back removal tools which will engage in two or three of those square slots arranged around the case back. You know that a scratch on the case back is likely to be deep and permanent? just saying.....

I do have a few caseback opening tools, both the two and three prongs. There was zero give at all, so I stopped because I dont want to put a mark on this beauty.

That case looks quite sharp, congrats!

Funny how only a few tritium indexes just fell off very cleanly… In that case, what would be the relume strategy ? Re-do all of them or only the missing ones ?

I will just leave it as it is, I dont really mind. There are lume particules inside the crystal, they light up under a black light. Not how they just slipped off their plots, there are no marks or dents in the case indicating an impact.

Can a watch which is left dormant and in a single position for a very long time simply have lume come away on its own?

@M00NW@TCH

Don’t know what others think, but I would at least stabilize the hands lume that appears to be fragilised.

No idea of how those indexes fell off… But I’m tempted to think it has nothing to do with a physical shock…

That looks perfect, no flexing parts. I will consider it for sure, cheers!

I've got a Forstner 1450 bracelet coming, so I'll be trying it soon. I'll let you know how I get on.

Well I finally had someone open this watch. The serial is 31326553, so what would that make this watch? My watch maker said the case was never opened which is crazy.

Serial number seems consistent with the previous advice you've received. Output from I love my speedmaster is:
  • Production estimate May 1971
  • ST145.022-69 Pre Moon (Caliber 861)
  • ST145.022-74 (Caliber 861)
  • ST145.022-71 (Caliber 861)
Another thing to make of this watch is that the movement might not have been serviced in 50 years - possibly a bit overdue a trip to your watchmaker?

My watch maker has it as we speak. It just took me ages to get down there. Sorry, are you saying that this is from May 1971???

My understanding of the output is that the movement is estimated to be produced in May 1971, so could feasibly have been fitted to models ranging between the -69 to -74 suffixes.

Gotcha, thats still slightly older than I had thought. I was leaning towards 75-76.
