I'm more curious about what is the second most useful guide? The most definitive isn't really questionable, no disrespect.

"A Moon Watch Story: The Extraordinary Destiny of the Omega Speedmaster" is an abbreviated version by the same authors. Maybe it is second best?

It's got the all important Kung Fu Grip! 👍
Yeppers…and they warned me at the vintage toy store [where I purchased that GI Joe] to not mess with Joe’s Kung Fu Grip due to the deterioration that occurs over multiple decades to the Kung Fu Grip plastic. The vintage toy store staff stated that they see quite a few Kung Fu Grip GI Joes with “nubs” for hands. Of course…when I arrived home I started thinking…I can do the old college Kung Fu Grip try with my 1861 and Omega Speedmaster placard…so that’s where that pic originated…and Joe’s hands did NOT break off…YAY! 👍

My wife is on the hunt (for a book), and has asked me why the large difference in price between hardbacks that seemingly have the same content but different front covers? Or is it simply some stores are charging $500 while others are charging $150?

The hardcover picture is different than the slip cover picture on the 3rd MWO edition, so you are probably seeing some books with the cover and some without. The pic by @SpeedyPhill above does not have the cover on, most of the time you'll see the book pictured with the cover on, a black dialed Speedmaster. Same book.

The best one is the upcoming version!
Is there a 4th edition coming soon?

I just wish there were cheaper options to buy in Australia. UK has the best deals that I can find for Moonwatch Only

Not sure about the best book, but this guy does a pretty in depth break down of the SR reference:
