When did the meaning of “good” change?

Today I was tagging in this post on Instagram:

Did I miss a memo?

Did they change the meaning of good?

Are others seeing something I’m missing?

I looked at the picture for a while, observed the moisture damage to the dial, the damage to the subdial from the sweep hand, the mouldy lume on the hour and minute hands... and struggled to see a “good” dial and hands.

I commented as such, and was promptly untagged, I guess because I wasn’t prepared to confirm the owners statement.

There are lots of words you could use to describe it, but to me, good would never be one of them... patinated, interesting, damaged... but not good.

What the heck is going on, when watches like this, are thought of as “good”?

Like what you like, buy what you like, but don’t try to convince me that back is white, and up is down, I’m too long in the tooth to buy into such nonsense.

And so endeth my rant.

Goodness is in the eye of the beholder. The world will do what it wants, whether it is right or wrong.
And, maybe the back is white.

Some people like the "patina" that others might see as damage...

“Maybe you should think about getting that original crown, mate.”

Dealer stock has been getting pretty scrappy lately IMO.

I think there’s a big difference between liking the dial, and believing it’s a “good” dial.

Perhaps bad has become good when someone can't actually afford good. 😁

For Somlo pricing, you’d want the watch to be NOS. ::facepalm1::

😁

I’d buy into that concept, if he hadn’t bought the watch from Somlo... considerably above market, if previous sales are anything to go buy.

I’we been seeing a lot of “good” watches being offered lately, at “mint” prices... ::facepalm1::

And no, a beat up, damaged, worn out, kicked to pieces, water damaged, crapped on watch will never be “good” even if some like patina, or for the watches to show their use and age.

When he is attempting to justify how much he must of paid, of course he’s looking for positive feedback that it’s good.

I read it a bit different : « when the dial and hands are this good, the crown is the least of your problems » 😁
