When did the meaning of “good” change?

You don’t get it, it’s « good » because it’s been liked on Instagram by the guy from Fratello Watches, Balasz Ferenczi @ferenczibazs.
He just knows what’s good or not. Maybe he’s friends with the poster.

I'm sure it's been said many times before, but there are some serious charlatans selling vintage watches these days. Particularly with instagram accounts.

"I commented as such, and was promptly untagged."

Well ... that's what you get Chris for not "ooo-ing" and "ahhh-ing" in the prescribed manner.

If you were untagged for that then you did well.

With a lot of the "good" watches being hoarded by collectors, perhaps the definition of the word has been loosened by dealers.

Btw, I rather like the patina on the dial

I think it’s the customer calling the watch “good” tbh Arwind... Somlo would likely have used something even more inappropriate. 😗

Do you like the patina on the dial, for the price Somlo will have charged? 😉

Maybe with all the tatoos on his wrist the owner likes the tatoos on the dial ? 😁

The dial looks like someone threw up in it :

Quod erat demonstrandum, the dial is ‘good’.

Rest of the watch sucks tho 😒

I think there’s a big difference between liking the dial, and believing it’s a “good” dial.
Have to completely agree with you on this. There is a difference between loving a dial and saying it’s in good condition. One can love anything. But condition I feel is a bit standard all around.

Good meaning, “good enough to sell to some unsuspecting customer”

I think you’re all being a bit too critical. The guy obviously wrote that on a smartphone with autocorrect. He probably meant to write “gooed”.

The Instagram post was by the guy who’d just bought it. 😗

“More money than sense” comes to mind.

Hm.

I mean, whatever floats their boat, right?

Personally I think they're just trying to justify their expenditure by getting people to give him good comments. That'll make him feel better.

Although I don't know how anyone would feel better looking at that dial and not get the feeling that their wallet feels much lighter than before.

Back in the day when I traded Magic: the Gathering cards, we had the descriptor VG (‘very good’) for cards that were basically crap. EX (excellent) was passabele, and you had to have NM (near-mint) if you wanted a truly decent copy.

G (‘good’) cards were chewed up rubbish. Kinda like this watch. Maybe the seller is a former collectible card dealer then?

This is the grading guide from Discogs for ‘Good’ when referring to records, CDs and tapes. Very Good, Very Good Plus, Near Mint and Mint all sit above Good, while Poor refers to something worth 5-10% of a Mint version:

‘Good (G), Good Plus (G+)
Vinyl
Generally worth 10-15% of the Near Mint value. A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be played through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise, scratches, and visible groove wear. A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear, or other defects will be present. While the record will be playable without skipping, noticeable surface noise and "ticks" will almost certainly accompany the playback.

CD
There are a lot of scuffs/scratches. However it will still play through without problems. This has not been handled with much care at all.

Insert/Inlay/Booklet/Sleeve/Digipak: Well worn, marked, more obvious indentations, fading, writing, than a VG - possibly a more significant tear/rip.

Cassette
Sleeve will be well worn, marked, and contain obvious indentations, fading, and/or writing, more so than a VG grade - possibly a more significant tear/rip. Tape will have heavy wear on shell. Felt stopper may be missing. Tape may have minor creasing, but not broken. Must play through, may have heavier degradation that will overpower music.’

So maybe his concept of a Good description was taken from here...

Perhaps bad has become good when someone can't actually afford good. 😁

Now, that’s great empathy. Makes sense.
