What Would You Do? Low Cost 5513 Upper Underline Project

This might be where I land

For the low cost to assemble it, I can try it out. Worst comes to worst, I take it all apart and proceed with option 2 and sell the good stuff. I'll certainly recoup the money to wear it. At the same time, if I fall in love with it, I'll know where I stand in the future when lightning strikes and will keep it tucked away as @S.H. mentioned.

But realistically, all said, I think it will end up with someone else. It fell into my lap, and was never on my radar. Those two things alone make me think it's not in the right home.

Keep in mind that, like me, you can trade, not sell, for something that interest you in particular (and forget a bit the "market value"). Sometimes a rare item like what you have here can make something interesting appear. Cash on hand, not so much.

That's actually a great point. Would help bridge the gap and keep the money in the hobby. A way into something fun directly as if it was what was originally found.

My guess would be the dial and movement would bring better money sold separately. Maybe for the mean time work on that movement to get it complete and running?

Yeah, sorry, that's what I meant. It would never be sold as a complete watch. Just the good stuff.

Or did you mean, each separate from each other? That also make sense based on who wants what.

And yep! Plan is to get it to a running state regardless.

I'm leaning towards #3 with a future #1

This is what I was thinking even before I got to this part of your post. Seems like a case can be tracked down for now and then you have unlimited time to hunt down the perfect "final" case for the project.

You’ll find a lot more value/return in selling the movement and dial separate. Same with the hands.
If you can’t get anything to work with a trade (as mentioned above) you’re sitting on a treasure.

As an example of pricing, around 3 years ago I came across a tropical brown gilt sub dial from my wife's Godfather's shop in Cebu City. It had been relumed but was still glossy and presented well. I ran it by Eric Ku to make sure it was 100% kosher aside from the reluming and then sold it on his site for $2800, which was still too cheap at that time. Yours isn't tropicalized brown but very presentable so should still bring a good chunk of change.

Appreciate the insight. There was a dial that sold recently on ebay for $6k, not sure why or if that standard these days, but that's one of the reasons I got side tracked on what to do with this.

Obviously there's much lower sold listings, so who knows really without testing it out.

I'd say get the movement running (not a lot of $) put it in an aftermarket case; enjoy the hell out of that dial and in the meantime keep you antenna up

although possibly quite expensive, it might be a very rewarding experience! that being said, i think this will be a long term project if you want to go the distance.

You also might want to look for watches being sold as parts - say flooded watches where everything but the case is toast. Might give you more options than just looking for an empty case.

Edited to heed my own advise.

Don't want to get this locked so let's not talk too much about the repop stuff, please.

Wow I’m trying to close on a deal on a 5513 that needs that dial. Correct serial. I will know this weekend and maybe we could work something out?

Possibly, but I've gone down the rabbit hole a bit so it would be a hard sell. But never hurts to talk!

Hell, would love to see photos of what ever you're working towards as well. Just out of curiosity.
