Okay - changing tact. I have a Seamaster Professional to kick me off. However if you were starting your speedmaster collection for let's say around £2000ish what would you buy?

I would try to find an early and unmolested 1970s Speedy. The 321 ones are all out of range at GBP2000 if you do not buy something that will take another GBP1500 to set straight. I think the early 70s cal 861 ones, stepped dial and tritium, can still be found in your range. They are (still) not gone ballistic in terms of prices.
Always leave some cash over for a full movement service!

Sounds like good advice

Could spend a bit more
Can't we always😀
I think if you browse around you may see where a given amount is taking you. I would opt for an "as early as possible" Speedy for my money. However I would much rather choose a slightly newer one in good original condition than an older and not original one.

Happy Hunting!

Doing a straight conversion, you're 2000 GBP is about $3000 USD, which can get you almost any used Speedy variation between the years of 1970 and 2005 save for limited editions. So, rank what is important to you; style, movement, history, caseback, originality, resale value, etc. etc. Your price point is quite flexible if not going to get you into the big boys (Pre-moon, 321, straight lug, 2998, etc) which escalate quickly in price.
Good luck with the search.

I'm with Dennis on this. What the heck, I say forget the speedy (heresy, I know, I know) and get a dress watch to complement the Seamaster Professional.

A nice pie-pan Connie as D suggested. Or that lovely JLC MC currently on sale on this forum. Or a lovely pie-pan connie AND a vintage Longines...

That looks a bit overpriced to me. A well-respected private seller has a similar piece (though on a handmade leather strap vs the old bracelet) for $1500 less currently.

Sellers often go high on Buy It Now prices. The theory is shoot for the stars and maybe you'll land on the moon. (Speedmaster pun intended!)

Put a bit more and get a vintage cal. 861 circa 60s or 70s Speedmaster Man on the moon.

Like the Speedy very well but I'm another who votes for the gold Constellation of the 50s as most essential to acquire for that money.
