If you had a Time Machine, and could be transported back in time to the 60s, what watches would you buy? The question in not only focused on watches that increased in value exponentially. But also on different factors. For example, watches that were discontinued after a short period of time, and are very difficult to find nowadays in good condition. One of my picks would be the Zenith Diver A3637 Big Lemon (photo below from the internet). It is like the ultimate BBQ watch, for a hot Saturday in summer. Very few have dared to design something as outrageously flamboyant in the subsequent decades. NB: I am new in the forum, so apologies if someone already came up with a similar thread before.
I know this doesn’t answer the question you asked, but you can look all your life for that Zenith or just get yourself one of these. Huge history behind these watches, and available now on the DOXA website.
What a good thread! I now realise, with hindsight and not after psychotherapy and counselling, that when I started as a trainee lawyer in 1969, what I really wanted for a watch was an Omega (never a Rolex I’m afraid) and not a brash or flashy one either. One that I could wear with jeans or with a suit. Either of these would have been perfect and, to my mind, still are
I would probably buy 3 6263 PN oyster sotto or RCO, One to wear for the rest of my day on this world and two to sell to live comfortly the rest of my day and one speedmaster 67 to alternate the PN.
Watch:1969 Zenith El Primero/ late 60's Omega Geneve Car:Ford 1967 GT40 And a beer for my grandfather.
I'd hang around, wait a few years after the 60s and stock up on Apple, Microsoft and Google shares and save some toilet paper rolls for 2020...
My country, Romania, lacks a lot of things, but toilet paper isn't one of them, gladly. People here stock rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide as I could not find any on a 4 kilometer radius. I guess mother nature knows best. .
So does the item you buy have to come back with you in the time machine?. Is there weight limit?. Size limit?
Probably a few apartments in Manhattan, they were cheap back then. And would have been a stellar investment. Watch wise I would have bought a Patek Philippe Ref 2499 chrono/perpetual calendar. The best looking of this iconic model imo, was never interested in the Ref 3970 followup starting in 1985.
