Selecting the top 3 from 2024:

1. Seamaster 14779 Ribbon dial
This year I added my first “special” dial, with the well known curtain/ribbon. It has quickly become one of my favourites. I just love the light reflection on the dial, it is stunning.

2. Omega Geneve cursive 2981
It took me almost 2 years to find a strong condition Omega geneve cursive without date. These models are beautiful in their simplicity and elegance. Managed to find it locally which was great. This one hosts an automatic caliber 491.

3. Hooded lug Seamaster 14363
And one which is technically going to arrive in 2025, but it will be silly not to include it, photo courtesy of @iamvr. Very excited to try this design on the wrist!

And a big thank to all the members who have advised/helped me on these purchases! I am very grateful.

Another from late 2023, an 1877 model, 18-size, 13-jewel Waltham R E (ROYAL) Robbins grade, gold filled Dueber Hunter case. Coulda had it for free, but I convinced the owner to allow me to pay him for it. It needed rather a lot of work, but I had everything I needed on hand. I am wearing it today (Dec. 25) as it happens. Royal E Robbins rescued Waltham from bankruptcy. Built circa 1885.

Some "grammar of design" SEIKO 45-7000 hi beat from 1968 with hack-set.

Wanted a small hand-wound steel "classic".

Came with see-through back and the original one.

Thx to the seller, if he reads this....

I was supposed to mostly sell this year. I did but also added some...

@S.H. Very nice varied collection. How are liking the ghost and silver conquest? They are both on my radar, but haven’t committed to seek them out.

The ghost DJ is very cool with a smooth bezel. Feels really different than the 1603. Does not look like the usual rolex, it is a bit refreshing.

The steel conquest is cool too : slightly beefier than a 2846 seamaster. It has a 1950s sports watch feeling, I have a generic bor for it which fits better than leather IMHO. You can try the 35mm modern reissue to see if you like it, faithful even if the old dial is miles better.

I have one parked somewhere, a 1968 model waiting for a service.

An excellent choice 👍

I've found some great watches in 2024, some were complicated projects, some from watch fairs and also a few fantastic auction deals, here the best of the bunch

These first 3 were all big projects causing major headaches all the way along in one form or the other, but I'm extremely satisfied with the results

2471

2393

2627

This Tissot 15TL was a recent Ebay pick up

Two 14700's both from watch fairs

2852 piepan

168.005 piepan

Seamaster with technical dial

And last but not least this very photogenic Teutonic Speedmaster

That’s a remarkably impressive year in collecting, what a collection of great pieces 👍

Rolex Explorer is my humble contribution. Rolex appear to becoming more available, so registered an interest with the AD, and it turned up within a few weeks..

The reason the picture looks a bit washed out is because it is angled towards a Velux window and the sky above.

Out of interest, did you have a prior relationship with the AD? I registered for an Explorer at a new AD in my city around the same time as I got my Railmaster mid year and I haven't heard a peep from them.

This is my year:

The Fratello x Nivada Grenchen Racing Chronograph, my beloved reverse panda.

1995 Hesalite Sandwich, best patina dial + bracelet (1479/812) IMHO.

The Silver Snoopy 50th, which I have been hunting for a year.

The Royal Oak Chronograph 26715st, the surprised gift from my wife for the Xmas.

My favourite acquisition of the year, definitely this Omega

Some trinkets I bought too

I have now a grand total of 50 watches, which is far more than I had ever expected… I guess now is the time to slow down the pace ( 2025’s abstinence club ? ) and enjoy the collection for what it is 🤔

One of my favourite threads of the year. Thanks @MtV for starting it.

This years been a strange one for me. I had a comfortable job which I enjoyed and which gave me a nice bit of spare cash for watch collecting.
However, I decided in 2023 to leave my job at the end of the year and start my own business which opened in Jan 24. This has meant my watch fund is seriously depleted (hopefully only temporarily!) and I decided in the second half of 2024 to sell a lot of my watches to free up some while my business becomes profitable hopefully in 2025.

Anyway, at the end of 2023 I made a list of objectives for 2024. Some I achieved and some are on the current list.

Objectives for 24
1. 321 Speedmaster, ideally 105.012.
2. Camaro, 3 register V72 NT.
3. Modern Seiko diver.
4. Another 16030 DateJust. I used to have a blue dial version which I miss. The grey/linen dials are also a possibility.
5. Rolex GMT 16710.
6. 60’s Seamaster(s) with uncommon dials.
7. Most importantly, Condition, condition, condition.

So, how did I do this year?

No 321 Speedmaster and I sold a lovely -71 but I did get my hands on a few Camaros. In an ideal world I’d have kept these but starting my business has had a severe impact and meant many have had to go.

Standard SKX came in as a beater, I’ve turned away from a DJ for now but I did have a 16710 GMT for a few months which I really liked but couldn’t justify having the money tied up in it this year. I expect this is one I’ll return to in 12-18 months.

60’s Seamasters continue to be a constant interest for me, even though I probably wear one once a week at most. I just love the dial variations and they’re a re without a doubt the best value in vintage watch collecting. Here’s a few that came in this year. I expect this is where I’ll focus my attention for 2025 as they’re fun, interesting and cheap!

I also detoured slightly into 6 digit Rolex with a sub and Explorer 2. I really like the E2 and this may well compete with the 16710 when it comes to getting another back in my collection in a year or two.

My only watch purchase this year came via our own @Lépine , a Longines Baby Lindbergh hour angle watch, circa 1937. I did acquire one pocket watch movement, an 1870s Illinois Currier grade Model 1, it will be a donor for some parts my 1874 Illinois Miller grade Model 1 needs.
