What is a "dress watch" today?

That shirt is nearly devoid of starch!
Profuse sweating as you go into cardiac arrest after being poisoned would do that to the starch in your shirt. You knew that right? 😉

Damn it @Spruce, if you make me the winner I'll need to go out and buy a fancy new dress wardrobe to go with the watch, and then put myself out there to get invitations to fancy-pants dressy events. I'm feeling stressed. 😟
No worries. If you live anywhere near @JwRosenthal I have it on good authority that an ‘Ed Hardy‘ t-shirt is appropriate for any social occasion! 😀

I photographed weddings for 8 years, you would be shocked at what people think is appropriate attire.

You know I’ve read many horologist blogs that said a good leather strap and beautiful case can pass up for a dress watch, but I feel that James Bond wearing steel bracelets with a tux completely changed the look on what a dress watch is nowadays I guess. I’m not a die hard fan but there’s people who have like five watches they switch out during the day, gym, pool, running, dress/casual, work and home, to each their own.

Just to add my two cents. I think the 60's Omega deVille and Constellations with pie pan dial are the classic dress watches to compare all others to.
Markers and hands should be gold regardless of color of the case, though a gold bezel improves the presence.
If you wear large gold rings then a gold bracelet is called for, otherwise a narrow leather band. Tan leather sets off a gold watch better than black, dark brown is next most preferred. An impressed texture, Croc, Reptile, Bamboo) is a plus, not only for looks but to make handling the watch while putting it on quicker and easier , not likely to drop it.
(Speed and ease of donning a watch can be very important if dressing quickly before her husband gets home.)

This thread is remaining very civilized and cordial!!! I can think of another very popular site that usually goes for about 20 pages before being shut down!!! It usually starts out OK, then people will start posting pic of James Bond wearing a Sub with a Tux thinking that makes it alright. Then someone chimes in with, "there are no rules, I'll wear what I want!!!" Then guys will start posting their super complicated Pateks, Langes, and gold Subs thinking that cost makes it a dress watch. It usually goes downhill from there.

The photos on my refurb iPhone take for hot garbage, so this is the best I can do to contribute to this thread. Here are the three I choose from when going to a "dress" occasion:

It is hard to beat a gold Connie (though I 'd class up the strap first):

The Pie Pan is always a contender for me. I wore this in my brother's wedding:

All that said, I am a huge fan of the Hamilton Whitford, with a Cal 770. American Patek, my friends! (Probably as close as I will ever get to one, anyways.) Slightly on the small side, but I love the hidden lugs. On the plus side, all these are small enough that my wife has no problem with borrowing one when necessary, which of course, is always an excuse for another..."Well, sweetheart, you can wear it too." 👍

@SkunkPrinceThere’s a lot more flexibility now than there used to be, but for a true and traditional dress watch, I think you won’t go far wrong with sticking to the old rules:

1. Black leather strap
2. Uncluttered face
3. Black or white/silver dial

Cal 83 inside - pre-Incabloc version, but probably OK unless it's that sort of party...

At the lower end of the price range.
I never get tired of this ultra low cost HMT SONA.
It checks all the boxes as an everyday dress watch and cheap enough not to worry if it gets trashed along the way.

I ordered two more as spares along with a NOS movement. All for less than a fair quality medium low end modern Quartz watch. I want to always have one of these to wear.

Its resemblance to 60's era Omega and Elgin watches is obvious. The movement is a licensed clone of a hand wound Citizen movement. Very accurate once fine tuned, within 2-4 seconds per day.
These have a reputation for excellent real gold plating, so despite the low cost you won't have your wrist turn green.

Might turn eyes green (with envy) 😉

Or this one?

I think, Professor, that you’ve found a winner here - elegantly peeping below the gold-linked cuff of a marcella’d evening shirt - and cheap as chips!
