Thanks for this, just got back from purchasing mine. No financing deals but able to get 8% so I'm pretty happy. Can you elaborate about the price increase in September? Why are the prices going up 6%?

Congratulations on a very nice watch!!

Extremely jealous

Hi all
I bought my Apollo 8 back in July 2019 and after this increase it will mean it has gone up 11% in just over a year which seems like a lot to me. But I still can't understand how the Alinghi DSOM is more expensive then the IMHO better finished and looking Apollo 8 including the better box it comes in.

They will have to allign the price somewhat with with the new alinghi model which is approximately US$ 1000 more expensive. With the low supply I think this watch will keep creeping updwards in price.

Ahhh this watch. I think I’m in love with the Apollo 8, but I’ve been all-in with Seamasters, never a Speedmaster, some silly questions...

No screw-down crown but 50m rated means there isn’t any worries about water, right?

It’s a manual wind - never had a watch like that before. I don’t think I mind that, I just don’t know. There’s talk of a new movement coming for manual Speedmasters in the 3861, this is the old one.

I don’t know if I care about that because I don’t know anything about either of them 😀 Other than the obvs history with the 1861, anyway.

And ceramic - I’ve read a lot of reviews and none really seem to talk about this anymore, but I remember there was concern it would break easily etc and even a snapped lug on this forum a while ago. My thoughts are it seems odd if Omega would ship something fundamentally fragile, but it isn’t as strong as steel. Is this still a concern?

I didn’t want to waste your time with creating a new thread for these, and I’m directly lusting after the Apollo 8, so hopefully this is a good thread to put this in! I’d like to get (or order by the sounds of it) it next month.

Tl;dr - is ceramic all good? 1861 vs 3861 - should Omega have included the new one in such an expensive watch? Are they likely to change it to the 3861 in the Apollo 8? No screw-down crown - does it matter when it’s still 50m?
I have the same questions and planing to get this watch for my 30th birthday . Have you bought this timepiece ?

My answers are:

- I am glad they used the 1861 as a basis for this watch (now labeled as 1869)!!! And do not believe one second that they will fit the 3861(9) in there

- ceramic has its limitations vs. SS, but Omega will actually cover your watch in case you have an accident. I was surprised to hear this at my OB, but Omega stands behind its products, including the ceramic cased watches.

- and no, 50m water resistance does not matter much. It is clearly NOT A DIVE WATCH, but provided that you do NOT operate the chrono pushers when underwater, you would be fine if you would get it wet (even in a pool). Due to the fact the original strap is in leather, I would personally not take it for a dive, but that is just me.

And now, the gratuitous wrist shot:

Re your point about 50m water resistance - i once read somewhere that for speedmaster 50m means that you should be worried if it rains on it... maybe it is an exaggeration but I do try to avoid rain with my apollo8. Taking it to the pool for me is unimaginable 😲

With 50m water resistance, you absolutely do not need to worry about rain!!
I also understand that the watch could go beyond 50m… but IMHO, the real risk is the accidental push of one of the chrono pushers.

I am not that sure about them being behind the ceramic case. I really don’t know what you mean by that but if you break it or chip it they will charge you around 6k for a new ceramic case. A friend of mine found out that the hard way with his original DSTM. Maybe if it is some defect from factory but otherwise I think that you are on your own.

I can not (and will not) really dispute your experience, especially since it was also my understanding so far that one would be on their own to repair a broken ceramic case, but I can only say again what my rep. at the OB told me last week: Omega would cover the repair of a damaged ceramic case so as to make people feel more at ease acquiring such a piece.

Obviously, I was surprised AND didn’t get it in writing, but I also have NO reason to doubt my contact has he has always delivered on what he told me.

Omega states that the depth rating of the watch is the depth it can go to. 50m means 50m...

I am going to put a deposite to my AD since they will give me 20%off base on the retail price . But idk if the service will do in the furture will be at the OB or AD will send it back to the factory ?
I hope I wont break the ceramic in the future if I hit the watch somewhere when I wear it by mistake .
THANKS

Very few ADs have their own (qualified) service centre so they will likely send it back to the Omega one.

Anyone who feels the cost of their watch is a significant outlay (many/most) should have it insured, regardless of what it's made of. With my insurance it doesn't matter of the repair is £1k or £7k, there is no premium on claims and I'm not left out of pocket. Insure it, enjoy it.

I think if you're somewhere that has 50m of rainfall in one go, the last thing you'll be worrying about is your Speedmaster...

I talked to my OB rep yesterday and he mentioned that Omega is not making any more Apollo 8’s and they stopped taking deposits for them since they won’t be able to full fill the orders directly from the factory. He said that they could try to outsource it from another market (country) if they have it but pretty much whatever it is in the market that is it. So if you are able to get one and with a discount good for you.

I just called my AD and I am going to put deposit to my AD next week . I hope I will get this timepiece during Sep(as they mentioned) and forward my "homework" to the forums.
Just a little bit anxious about the material if I can have this watch lifetime since it will be my first omega and my 30's birthday gift from my wife .

I would not really worry about the ceramic unless you’re going to do extreme sports wearing it. I would recommend you also to get the other band with deployant clasp. It feels safer to handle the watch

Thanks for your advice. Do you know where I can order the deployant clasp? I did not find any in the official website .

I got mine through my Omega boutique, but you will have to buy the band and the buckle. The regular band doesn’t work on this buckle.
