What’s happening on March 26th then?

And people won’t remember Swatch as the one that dashed their hopes- they will remember that they were promised the opportunity to buy an Omega Moonwatch at an affordable price and it was snatched away from them by the big bad snobby Omega- who obviously only cares about influencers and rich people.

And that's the problem with a cross promotion, the goals, and best interests, of the Omega Group aren't aligned with the Swatch Watch groups goal. Omega has no control over production and distribution yet they will get a lot of flack if Dick and Jane aren't given an opportunity to snare an Omega branded Speedmaster for $260.

Yup- that’s the rub. I have high hopes but low expectations.

Broadly speaking I take and agree with your point, though on the quoted piece with almost absolute certainty the terms of this collaboration (including allowances on unit production, pricing, sales locations, roll out, consents for deviations, etc., weren’t all completely baked in).

Unless Omega and Swatch Group are run by toddlers, this is a fully orchestrated effort

Yes, on point. I'm guilty of giving my OB manager flack already because - as a loyal Omega customer - I'm cut out of the largest Omega release ever (even if it is a colab)

Didn't read this whole thread....but did anyone get their hands on any of these yet?

How do they feel?

Thoughts?

The swatch site had a note that says basically they are producing as fast as they can and these aren't limited...so don't pay outrageous prices, regular stick will be available at some point.

I'm not sure where you live but a few years ago Popeyes Chicken released their own chicken sandwich. Someone did a comparison with other fast food chicken sandwiches and said Popeyes was the best. Mad rush for everyone to get to Popeyes to try and every location sold out instantly. It was all over the news, Instagram, Facebook, etc. Great marketing hype for Popeyes to constantly show the long lines of people trying to get that sandwich.
My wife and I tried this sandwich for the first time 2 weeks ago while in NOLA. We both remembered the buzz of that initial release and talked about it, after all this time.

Create massive hype, draw attention a week before the other brands releases. Pause for a week or two. Take the brakes of during the other watch brands release announcements.

Blind Freddy can see what’s happening here. Marketing genius 😗

The high end watch world just got outdone by a plastic Swatch watch 😉

That’s what I love about this- why should anyone give two shits about Rolex’s new shade of green on their second hand- that they can’t get anyway, when they can buy a Moonswatch!

And don’t assume I think that pop-rock bands on a major label with commercial management are inferior musicians. Personally, Radiohead comes to mind for me as a potential candidate for the sort Omega of the watch world in this metaphor. Classically trained, unarguably great musicians, and still yet very commercial. Radiohead plays Lollapalooza. Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke did a collaboration with the rapper MF Doom.

While I am a big Radiohead fan, I struggle a bit to think of Omega as the Radiohead of the watch world. (Visions of Cindy Crawford dancing to Paranoid Android are crossing uncomfortably through my mind.) But I do agree that Omega has the artistic flexibility and corporate leeway to play the high-low fashion game in a way that Rolex, PP or AP simply cannot. Also, I absolutely agree this was marketing genius, far more effective than most of the marketing campaigns that Omega has launched in the past in raising brand awareness and creating buzz around their most iconic product.

There was no perfect analog for everyone!

Can we not talk about curtailed production on the moonSwatch. Previous releases on bio ceramics were store only, then went to online and in store.

interesting. We’re they initially limited to a few stores per country, and a few dozen watches per store?

From what i remember the full set of NASA watches were limited supply to select stores. Can’t remember if there was hype/flipping on the individual watches.

I think the difference is that this collection is a collaboration with Omega, a brand that is likely invested in keeping their (co-)branded products somewhat exclusive despite their claims of widespread accessibility.

At this point we don’t really know the terms of the collaboration or really how this will play out, just engaging in some good old-fashioned educated speculation. We will surely find out soon enough...

I teach in a secondary school in Azerbaijan, I showed my form group the Moonswatch today during registration, 14 boys and 3 girls all wanted to know where they can get one. They thought they were super cool. I have showed them and talked about watches to them on numerous occasions, some blank faces, some really interested, but never have I had an entire class picking watches. They were even more happy when I told them the price.
I'm surprised that Azerbaijan has a Swatch Boutique with these releases! They missed India!!

There are probably 100 threads about this on WUS...
On reflection, best to chill about this and let’s see what happens. It may be good for Omega or it may be good for Swatch and not even effect Omega long term. Yes it was a bit of a shock, but being over negative is no good for anyone. This comment is directed at everyone on the forum and myself.

They don't have them here, but they do in Istanbul, and everyone here knows someone who is going to Turkey on business or on Holiday on any given day.

I received this from Swatch last night. Pay special attention to the final sentence:

“The Bioceramic MoonSwatch Collection is not available for the time being for purchase online. We remind you that it is not a limited edition and will soon be available again in selected Swatch stores. Please click HERE to view an updated list of stores. Or use the link below to sign in on our page to get notification when the collection will be available online.”

Gee, they’ll be available on-line, probably soon and probably not in limited numbers.

I guess that means they will be following the age-old dictates of the Law of Supply and Demand while eschewing the dictates of Modern Apparel Marketing 101.

They’re going to sell you as many artichokes, um, watches as you want . . .

Not so opposed to being first and last in snark, just more of a disher than a taker, eh?

Ps: being available online tells us nothing at all about supply. Nike sells its limited production sneakers online (not counting the few dozen it sends to “select” retailers). Same goes for Supreme, and every other quintessential “hype” retailer on the planet.

One of the fundamentals of supply and demand is that you must first generate demand
