misleading because these are homicide rates only
True. Of course if you’re more worried about losing your watch than losing your life you might choose to live somewhere other than London.

There have also been a number of incidents where Premier League footballers have been targeted when leaving their homes or training grounds as they generally have nice watches.
Nearly the same thing in France recently. Several PSG players had their houses broken into while they were away playing a match. Since, they hired a security team to watch their houses while they play or train

More 2017 Spain gov. data:
Foreigners: 10.1% total pop., 23.1% total crimes.
Would be interesting to have the same stats focused on unpriviliged areas...

To me, the fascinating part of this thread is

- the middle aged men who've lived in London for decades (me included) basically saying "Yeah, of course there are thefts in a major city, especially if you're showy - but actually London is pretty safe"
vs.
- one bloke who moved away & moans about the "good old days" (when, as I remember it, terrorists blew up pubs, the NF were on the streets menacing anyone brown & the police weren't much better - but the white working class got a quiet life if they kept their heads down & weren't political)
vs.
everyone else debating what this all means for their watch safety.

I travel all over London all the time. I have family members involved in crime monitoring. Watch thefts are almost insignificant. The vast majority of reported thefts are thefts from parked cars and handbag thefts when people are looking the other way.

If you come to London, don't leave your bag/ipad/laptop in a car, keep your valuables in your pockets & not in handbags, and don't behave like you're a casino owner walking along the promenade in Monte Carlo - you'll have a perfectly enjoyable time 😀

@SpikiSpikester your personal access to real crime data is reassuring. I think the watch crime locations (Mayfair, Central London) + the $$$ stolen makes for a good tabloid story...the shitty thing is that all this media sensationalism probably draws more people into targeting this sort of crime, even opportunistic robbers and not specialized gangs.

Well, I know you're defending your city, which is great, but let's be fair about this, we are mainly talking about theft here, and more generally violent crime. Homicide rates are important of course, but they are statistically tiny numbers and not always directly related to overall crime rates.

Twenty Top League players and one coach had their (very posh) houses burglered last year in Spain by dedicated specialist gangs.

Would be interesting to have the same stats focused on unpriviliged areas...

I don't think those stats exist by neighborhoods, at least not public. But Barcelona is the unsafest city (by official crime rates data) in the country being the second richest.

I think UK situation is probably closer to my country, Spain. Here foreigners (legal and illegal) make for around* 30% of prisons inmates, while legal foreigners make only around** 10% of total population, plus estimated 1% illegal. Figures for Catalonia region (cap. Barcelona) where I live were 43% and 13% respectively in 2017. Obvious conclusions.

In central Barcelona there are gangs of 'unacompanied minors' (underage illegal inmigrants from N. Africa) roaming freely assaulting tourists on the streets to take their cells, watches, whatever. They are legally irresponsible, not included in the prison figures given above.

* between 29 and 36 in the last 15 yrs.
** between 7 and 12 in the last 15 yrs.
Official gov. data.

Talking about statistics:
In my country, Switzerland, 25% of the population are foreigners. More than 71% of the prisoners here are foreigners, 78,6% foreigners in pre-trial custody. These are the officially published numbers.
According to the following article, it's Europe's highest ratio of foreigners in prisons for countries with more than 1 Million citizens.
Fun fact: in Monaco, 100% of the prisoners are foreigners 😉

Here's an interesting article in German about it:

@Rochete : in Spain it's 28% vs. 11% in England according to my article. Very different to the situation in Switzerland!

if you eschew, the wisdom of not advertising your wealth …then you run the risk, of being a victim

I have carried 3/4 million pounds worth of jewellery, ( inc platinum VC’s ), in a cheap plastic Air France flight bag in the past…on public transport…from London, back to my Studios, in Manchester …no problem whatsoever

Like you, I want everyone in this thread to know I too am a man of great wealth without advertising I'm loaded. I also regularly carry around up to 2/3 of a million in jewelry and watches but not 3/4 of a million worth. That's just too risky.

Yet, 1/5 people living here being at risk of poverty according to the IERMB (below 60% of minimum wage). It is on par with the rest of Spain

It is not because a few people earn a lot that all make decent money

You have obviously ( deliberately ? ) mis understood, my recounting of a professional memory

Before Academia…I was an Advertising photographer for many years…one of my clients at that time, was Harrods

In order to shoot their jewellery section for a catalogue…I had to sign for, and transport the items back to Manchester ( 180 miles away )…I caught the train…btw

The jewellers, ( to the Queen), themselves supplied the very battered flight bag…and advised that ‘remaining in plain view with very minimal security’ …was the safest method of transport

QED…flying under the radar

Quite how you conflate my former Career …with ‘great wealth’ eludes me ?

it looks to me like they knew exactly what they where stealing. Too much of a coincidence that they would score such a gem and not many people can recognize a watch of that value, and too much effort for a random hit.

As for the police caring for a watch....maybe not, but they certainly care for 115000 pound valued asset.

I seem too recall reading in another paper that the gentleman had been attending a Breguet function nearby so maybe they were already looking out for people exiting that venue with the knowledge they may well be wearing a "decent ' watch.

You can see why Time 4a Pint GTG venues are kept secret.

Unlike you I don't have great wealth, and on top of that I have a very small penis. Just thought since we are sharing....👍

Nobody seemed the least bit interested in my steel Connie C-shape. Of course I was dressed in jeans and a T-shirt and didn't just pop out of a Ferrari.

Only to be expected when you're in the city.
