Haha yeah but the ding is unsightly! Option 3 isn't a possibility, it's making your OCD go into overdrive, you can't sleep, you think you're going mad, you've even joined a watch forum 😁

Well, small dings don't bother me really, but not everyone is able to get there I know...

@omegastar I can certainly sense some sarcasm in your posts, but I am struggling to understand their deep, full meaning. Can you please enlighten me? Is the message that these watches are fully original, untampered-with GMT's? thank you 😀

Edit - you might even have out-sarcasm'ed the great @ulackfocus ! 😲

Well, it has been said several times that some specialists could refinish a case like new and that no one could tell the difference...

That might put you on the watch list - and I don't mean wristwatch! 😲 😜

I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread - thanks to all. A little while back I took a dive into vintage Rolex buying from a dealer and came away thinking somewhere between “I will never walk into that minefield again!” and “Its not too painful if you learn to accept they are all molested on some level”.

I’m still waiting for lightning to strike and scoring that single owner barn find full kit DRSD.

It would be nice if members would post those « perfect GMT » that are on the market to see if we are able to identify what has been done to them, will we stand the test ?

Easy one! Check the Southeast Asian markets or Italy 😀

I am not calling out specific watches, but rather the trend as of late.

The scary thing is that I have clue of how to distinguish...maybe gilt dial GMTs had a tendency to languish in safes for decades around the globe.

Here is polished 1675 gilt for those who want to see the difference.

That one was over-polished before the work. "Near Mint condition case" 😲 🤬 The chamfers are almost as wide as the lugs after the re-cut.

Well to be absolutely sure you should avoid all dealers and even online sellers, and seek out those pensioners whose watches have been sitting in a drawer for decades and not once been sent for any repairs. When asked, I imagine they should reply "oh yes, I have an old Rolex that doesn't need any batteries, would you like to take a look?". 😜 That is the level of originality I am willing to accept.

In life, nothing can be 100% sure. Even if you buy from the original owner, whats going to stop them from concealing(or genuine memory loss) any part of the history regarding the watch?

The more important aspect of this passion is to acquire as much as possible, the knowledge and a keen eye for details.

I'm perfectly happy with a nice, honest, period correct GMT. Not going to go crazy and on a foolish hunt to find an 'unpolished' watch, I buy what I like and enjoy wearing it. None of these watches are going to be perfect after 30-40 years of use, which is what's most attractive to me. Would I enjoy a NOS 1675? Probably a cool watch to own, but not one to wear, so where is the enjoyment in that? I have NOS watches in my collection, they are an enigma, a test in ones will power.

This GMT brings me the most pleasure to wear on weekends. It's an honest '72, MK2 and most notably, its been POLISHED....which doesn't bother me one bit.

It's been re-cut so far the bevels are at the springbar holes.
