US gov restricting flights from Europe?

Hi everyone

One of my packages going to the US is stuck at the UPS facility in Koeln, Germany. According to UPS, the US gov has currently limited / restricted flights from Europe to the US causing capacity issues and delays up to 10 days.

Has anyone experienced this as well? Do you have any more insights into these flight restrictions? Is this Covid related as several European countries have lifted their restrictions and case numbers have spiked up?

Certainly possible. I recently made a purchase that is supposed to ship from the UK to the US this week via FedEx. I’ll let you know what happens.

UPS uses Passenger planes internationally for most of its US bound parcels unlike DHL and FedEx who use their own planes.
Less flights Less cargo.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. Explains the price difference 😀.

Same as Australia Post has a freight agreement with QANTAS
Most countries postal systems have agreements with their national carriers for postal items.

The main reason parcel prices have gone up twofold and freight is taking longer. All the couple of air cans of mail and cargo on every passenger plane stopped when countries closed down.

The amount of freight carried on planes when the pandemic first hit was crazy. Airlines were ripping seats out and hand stacking passenger sections of planes with cargo as it was a backlog to convert planes to freighters

I had a FedEx shipment delayed on March 17th in Koeln last week, supposedly it missed the connecting flight to Memphis. But the delay was less than 12 hours and it got to Memphis ok, now in Customs being processed. Doubt you'll have too much delay.

According to the initial schedule it should have arrived in the US last Friday. Now they're saying they're prioritizing UPS Express parcels over Standard ones. I'm the seller/sender, so as much as I want this transaction to be fully completed and off my mind, the buyer is a tad more anxious, understandably.

You and the buyer are at the mercy of UPS, there isn't much you can do but wait it out. Not always easy to do, I know, but that's the way it works.

Not sure whether UPS was reading this thread, but things moved pretty fast all of a sudden. The buyer in the US will receive his watch this evening local time.

I could have spared you and myself this thread, but I thank you for the care and therapy 😁.

I sent a watch for repair from Montana to Germany made it there on the day FedEx said it would be delivered no problem a week ago. The war did have me worried if it was the right time to do it.

Well, it is a happy ending with minimal delay, really. I'm sure the buyer was not all that worried.
I'm sure transcontinental transactions are still safe 😀
